TREASURY HOARDS MONEY Department it Custodian of : Public WhIU and Should Keep Money In Circulation J. Pierpont Morgan Land- cd u Astute Financier. NEW YORK. Nov. 5. The Washing ton eot-respondent of tbe New York times, usually a keen observer of the ift of thing political, make the state vent in his current letter that tbe op ponents of Mr. Taft'a candidacy for the Republican Presidential nomination are ssotering on Governor Hughes as their standard bearer. While this no news ts New Yorkers who hare kept in close touch with the subcurrenta of national polities, it is interesting in that it show that the anti-Roosevelt wing of the party has definitely determined up a a course and also that they are hard put for a candidate who may be used to offset a continuation of "my policies." Tbe elements that are opposed to Mr. Boose velt do not find anything to ap . pland in tlfe "hew-to-the-line-letMhe- hips-fall-where-tliey-niav'' course of thia administration; and have cast a' leut desperately for a spear that, even S it "knows no brother will surely not fail to recognize a friend. In a quiet way, these reactionaries have been try' fag out several names to oppose to Ta't, and all hare been found wanting. Knox and Cortelyou were found to be under suspicion of too close a partisan to suit people who have ceased ' to regard strictly-drawn party lines; and Fair banks too spectacularly polaric. Hence Hughes even though he proved a bitter jSU to swallow! It has been evident for some time that affairs were shaping themselves up thus wise. The mere fact that Messrs. Roose- Telt and Hughes are known to occupy juicily critical attitude towards one an hers actions and policies was the Coventor's first recommendation to the WH Street and corporation interest interests composed of Republicans and Democrat alike, and U equally voci ferous in the cry of "lot our pocket book alone!" His second recommenda tion was the fact that he is a New Yorker, and the Ityau-Belmont-Sheehan group of wDemocrts"(so closely allied personally and financially with the big monred Republican interest) have deter mined that if Lieut-Governor Chanter is to be the Democratic Presidential nomine, they must oppose him with another New Yorker, or rest uneasily in the certain knowledge that Chanler would carry New York State. There fore, back of the Republican reaction aries in their support of Gov. Hughes will be found not openly and above- board, but none the less surely the powerful Democratic element that forc ed the nomination of AHon B. Parker four year ago. An indication of tbe grooming that GovJHugbes ia receiving at the hand of his friends wa that gentleman remark recently that while Worm should be instituted, the should be brought about "without tumult or disorder." In this simple phrase, the upholder of tbe Pre sident find a slogan of battle, and the Governor of New York is henceforth reckoned an enemy. To those familiar with the inner work ing of Empire State politics, however, Mr. Hughe js not regarded as dangerous to the success of Secretary Tsft. They argue that nothing is to be feared, in the present state of the public mind. from the opposition to Roosevelt and Taft of a man like Chas, E. Hughes former corporation lawyer, and one time associate of Thomas F. Ryan' personal counsel, Paul D. Cravath. V& 6 Hesitation means a loss to you of J5 p'er cent to 30 per cent on your woolen goods. He says: "If the national banks of the city had the right to expend their circulation in the manner provided by the plan of the .American Bankers' association, this week's insane scramble for cash would never have happened. Not all panics can be prevented by a perfect currency system, for some panics are the result of errors of judgment in the use of cap ital, the mischievous effects of which cannot be averted. The oresent. how- s ever, is a good times panic. It is psychological rather than financial in character. We find it causes in men's minds, not in business conditions. "The banks and trusts companies of this city have in their vaults the largest store of good credit that can be found in any city in the world, but much of it is utterly unavailable because of the rigid character of our currency system. One of the trust companies that closed its doors has in its possession live as sets amounting to over $50,000,000. All this credit is dead. It cannot do the work of a single dollar in the paying teller's cage. What is wanted in a time like this is freedom to convert the credit of banks into a medium sf payment that will satisfy the people. Then New York City would take care of any panic without the slightest need for aid from the federal treasury." Iroiisui lie Men lis Store. JUDD BROS. With peculiar fatality It entered the home of the principal witness for the proxeeution against Biliik one of the few members of the Vrzal family who escaped death in the plot.
