THE MORNING ASTOKIAN. AS'jOIUA. OREGON. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER ,6, 1907. FOUR MEN LOST. GasoliiKs on Yacht Explodes Throwing Seven Into Water. PERTH AM BOY, N. J. Oct 15.-Four men were drowned and three others bad Jy turned today when the gasoline in their yacht exploded or Kantan uay The dead are: Harry P. Barter, Floyd McRose. Edward J. Olsen and Charles Wiokbersf, all Of Perth Atfboy. The four killed with &ie others went nt for a sail on the bay with a new gasoline yacht. All went well until In ome unknown manner, the gasoline in the tank became ignited and an explo sion followed, throwing all aboard into the bay. C : . ' Three of the occupants, Joseph J. Hornby, Nelson P. T . Macan and Rich ard Rubedee, managed to catch hold of the rail of the launch and held on until the gasoline had burned itself out. All rwe badly burned about the hands, when they were rescued some hours later ly the steamer St. Michael. The survi vors are in a serious condition. I ; Of the four drowned, Barter was book fceener in the Terth Amboy National Bank; j MeEose was a draughtsman; Olsen was bookkeeper in thePerth Am fcoy Trust Company, and Wiekberg was mployed- by tbe Perth Amboy Tern Cotta Company. ' 1 ' ' MAY GET BACK PAY. Wages Due for Overtime in Navy Yard Daring Hayes' Administration. BROOKLYN, Oct. 13. After a lapse f 29 years, during which time Uncle Bam has owed themvertime money for extra work in the Brooklyn Navy lard, former employes of the yard and their descendants are now in a position where their claims against the government will most likely be paid in full. Lawyer Geo. Eiram Mann, of 15 William street, Man ibattan, has successfully carried through a, test ease, and now believes the large number of claims he has in charge will be paid off. It appears that in 1S77, under the ad ministration of President Rutherford B. Hayes, the secretary of the navy, who was then R. W. Thompson, issued an ffieial circular designating the day of labor for Navy Yard employes to be of eight hours' duration. In this circular 5t is understood the stipulation was made that those who desired might, work for 10 hours daily and be paid a proportion ate increase in salary. , Those who worked overtime on the strength of the official circular from the Navy Department have never been paid their overtime claims, nor have their leirs or descendants, many of the work ers themselves having died. ' Up to the passage of the Tucker act a few years ago there was no avenue open through which the claimants could carry their claims to the court of claims. The Tucker act enables them now to petition Congress, which in turn ean refer the matter to the court of claims, , & DONE BY DEED. a s s M. J." Kinney to J. F.
