Astoria, Oregon. Stefanssen Tells of Mikelsen Polar Trip. CHICAGO, Oct. 11. Details of the hardships experienced by members of the Lelftngwell-Mikel?en polar expedi tion, which was icebound in Beauford sea for nearly a year, reached Chicago yes terday, with V. Stefanssen, ethnologist of the expedition. Ernest De Koven Leffingwell, repre senting the University of Chicago, who was jointly in command of the expedi tion, is safe in northern seas, with other members of the expedition. Although he was present when the ex pedition's ship Duchess of Bedford went down and at one time was compelled to eat one of the dogs which made up his team, he is reported none the worse for the experience. MURDER TRIAL OPENS. Cancellation of Orders for Ships Causes Discussion. COPENHAGEN, Oct. 11. Coneerninc the Czar's order that uo Russian man-of- war shall be built outside of Russia, the correspondent learns the following from a prominent Russian diplomat. At the meeting of Ivaiser ana uuir at rwine munde one of the principal questions discussed was whether German ship yards should built part of the Russian raw. Ihe haner, who is verv much interested in the HhipbiHldinz industry of the fatherland, induced the Czar to promise to place a number of big battle ship orders in Germany. When the Aiiglo Rii-siaa treaty was completed, however, the Czar, under pressure from England, changed his mind and withdrew the German order, com manding that no warship could be built outside of Russia. The Czar's remark able telegram of commendation to the Danish firm that built his vacht, the Standart, and several of his cruisers is looked upon as a Mod aimed at Ger many. Fred Magill to be Proved Guilty of the Deed. DECATUR, Oct. 11. Assistant States Attorney Miller, of Dewitt county, open ed the trial of Fred and Fay Magill to day. William Reid of the Portland-Oregon A SeiK'Oust Railroad ha bwie asked to meet the promotion committee of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon and he is expected to arrive on the noon train. At this meeting the right-of-way matters interfering with the construc tion of the new railroad will be practi cally straightened out so that construc tion work may commence immediately. The price agreed on for the contested right-of-way will be put up by Mr. Reid, and both the latter and the deeds will be placed in escro to await the comple tion of about one-third of the road. If nothing is done within the required per iod, the money will 1 returned to Mr. Reid and the deeds to the property owners. Every indication points toward an amicabh? solution of the railroad's trouble with property owners, and with the exception of the Kinneys, most of the Clatsop county people have agreed to allow the railroad to develop this section. CZAR STIRS GERMANS. V0LIVA HATES TO GIVE UP. Files Petitions to Revoke Lease of Zion City. CHIICAGO, Oct. 11. Wilbur G. Voliva ha prepared six petitions praying Judge Landis to revoke Zion City's 1100-year lease and asking that warranty deeds be given instead. This action is taken to enable Voliva's followers to sell the property and move to his settlement in New Mexico. More than $100,000 worth of improved property has already been listed for sale and $0000 worth of un improved land. If this petition is grant ed by the federal court, Voliva will be ble to erect a temporary tabernacle within the limits of the city. Secretary WiNon tday authorized Major Henry R. Hersey, who assisted Walter Wellman in his aerial dash for the Pole, to repre- nt the government in the international aeronautic cup race from St. Louis Octo ber 21st. Major Hersey will use the same balloon . in which Lieutenant Lahm won in the international aeronau tic race held in Europe last year. He ill make temperature and humidity observations at various altitudes during his flight across the country to the Pa cific Coast. This will be the first aero nautic race ever held in the United States, and all of the leading European aeronautic clubs will be represented. The Tyler. A New Picture Show. Wilson's moving picture show will open tonight at 7:30 at 548 Commercial street ,in the room formerly occupied by the Ges Restaurant. It will be a con tinuous show and will be similar to the Nickelodeon which showed successfully here during the summer. This show will afford a fine opportunity for , spending part of the evenings of fall and winter and will no doubt be a success from its opening.
