' MONASTRIES ARE ATTACKED Victim Ar Mutilated by Having Ears Cut Off Murderous Attack An Rife la All Part of Disorganised Foreign Country. ' briOAGO," Sept. 27.-Vienna corns penitence of the Daily 'ows says: Ac cording to the most reliable Information received her tb situation in Macedonia today is worse than it has been for a rery long time. Murders, robberiee and other crlmea are every where rampant and the whole state of affairs Is fast becoming intolerable. : It. would seem from the meeting at IschU between Em peror Francis Joseph and King Edward that th great power wer at lenirth united In demanding that deform be carried out In Macedonia, and that the small Christian Balkan itate stop their racial flbht. . While murder and robberie ar re ported from nearly, every district ia Maoedonla,"th" aoutheastern pert of th country, including Salonlca, seems to b m a most disturbed condition, private lettela from semi-official sources In Sa lonlca give a terribl plctur of the ait-' uation there. Not a single day passes without a murder and sometimes two or three, and these not in' lonely sub urb or outside the city, but in the buslet and most frequented parts. The Greeks are Invariably the murderers. They are doing their utmost to terror ie the other nationalities, especially the Bulgarians, many of whom ar leaving th country s fast as they can And the means. Some of the murders reported were committed under peculiarly revolting circumstances. A few davs aero a Bal- garlan peddler wa found murdered on a road leading out of th city. His ears ww missing and the body was fearfully mutilated. After some dsys the Turk ish police arrested two suspects, Greeks, and put them in prison. One of them has made a confession directly Impli cating the Greek consulate at Salonica in the crime. The man' story is that, with two other Greeks he was aent for lata one night to come to the cosulate, wher they met the consul After much talking of patriotism h handed each of meant a revolver and dagger and di rected them to go to a certain place on1 a country road early the next moruing and wait for a Bulgarian peaunt to ooane. along with his donkey. They wer to kill th peasant and as a proof of having done so to cut off his ears and brine them to the consulate. One of the three weakened, but the other two duly carried out their murderous commission and broubht the bloody proofs to the consulate. It is difficult, of course, to ascertain what amount of truth there is in this man's story, but it is significant fact that the consul suddenly disappeared from Salonica, and is reported to have gone back to Greece. From all parts of the countryi in dis tricts quite remote from Salonica, comes almost daily reports of the atrocities' committed by the Greek.' Even th famous monasteries at far-off , Mount Athos, difficult of access as they are, have not escaped these murderous at tacks.,, The porters, gardeners and other servant of the monks, are mostly Bul garians, and , o many of them have been kidnaped and murdered during .the last few week, that the monasteries find it nearly impossible to get, servants.- Strongly fortified as these places ar the monks have lately doubled their precautions. The great doors are closed and barred at 7 o'olook every evening, after which hour nobody Is admitted. The Bulgarian monastery at Xagrof, one of the largest and richest on Mount Athos, is kept closed the whole day and no stranger cn gain admittance by any means. .. . Just what value can be placed on the Turkish authorities' efforts to stop these crimes can be seen from an inci dent that has just come to light in con nection with the recent kidnaping of a young Englishman named Abbot. When tiiis outrage .was brought to- the aten, tion of the vali, Hilmi Pasha, he thought that as the abpuotors were certainly Greeks, it would be a good thing to em ploy a Greek spy to trace them and so he applied to the' Greek consulate and asked for a reliable man.
