LIFE SAVERS RESCUE.
CORVALLIS, Sept. 20. Prof. Pemot's
motor boat figured in a sensational epi
sode at Newport Friday evening. .It
had met the evening train at Yatjuina
and was en route under the guiding hand
f Prof. Pernot with a party of friends
to Newport. In the party were Thomas
Callahan, Robert Huston, Miss Helen
Hostony Prof. Oorge Coote and others.
Near Newport the engine went tem
porarily out of commission, and the boat
and its passengers began to drift on an
ebb tide toward the bar. Heroic efforts
to make the engine do its duty failed,
and at' an opportune time the men from
the life saving station went to the res
cue and towed the drii'tiny party to
safety. The plight of the party ersated
considerable excitement for the moment
on shore and gave rise to exaggerated
reports, many of which gave the inci
dent undue importance.

Dredging Deep Water Channel to the
Ocean.
ABERDEEN, S.pt. 20. In connection
with the proposed improvement of Grays
Harbor by dredging an 18-foot channel
to deep water, the contract for which
has been awarded and upo which work
will soon begin, the following corres
pondence and recommendation by the
different government officials in charge
of the work, and now for the first time
made public, will be of interest.
In January, 1900, F. A. Pope, first
lieutenant of the U. 8. corps of engi
neers, in submitting his report of the
survey of the Harbor, and his recommen
dations to Brigadier General A. Mac
kenzie, chief of engineers, U. S. A.,
reported as follows:
"Grays Harbor consists almost en
tirely of tide flats with channels made
by the rivers running into the lurbor.
There are two main channels traversing
the harbor from cat to west, the north
arid nouth channels. The south channel
is hoal and is but little used. The
north channel is used by all ocean going
vessels entering the harbor. Tlierf: are
two !hoal in the north channel, ow be
low Hoquiam and one between Hoquiam
and Aberdeen. The middle channel has
been closed and the south one almose
entirely so by dikes. A channel. 100 feet
wide and 15 feet deep has been drsdged
part way through the shoal between
iloquiam and Aberdeen. A channel 100
feet wide and 15 feet deep has been
dredged part way through the shoal be
low Iloquiam.
"It is now desired to have a channel
provided that will permit ocean going
vessels to reach the wharves at Aber
den and Iloquiam and also to allow ves
sels to pass through the shoal of the
inner hurbor without having to wait
for favorable tides.
SIXTEtN ELK THERE.
Cured Hay Fever and Summer Cold
A. J. Nusbaum, Batesvllle, Indiana,
writes! "Last yeap I suffered for three
month with a summer cold so distress
ing that it interfered with my business.
I bad many of the symptoms of hay
fever, and a doctosj prescription did not
reach my case, and I took several medi
cines which teemed to only aggravate
my case. Fortunately I insisted upon
having Foley's Honey and Tar in the
yellow package, and it quickly cured me.
My wife has since used Foley's Honey
and Tar with the same success." T. F.

Predicted that This Band Will be Exter
minated During Open Season.
OOUVAUJS, Sept. 20. Over in the
woods, somewhere between C'orvallta and
the sounding sea to the southwest, tnere
is a herd of 10 elk, that it is freely pre
dicted, will be extcrmimited during the
present open tuion, beginning lust Sun
day nml ext'mfng to (Mtier ISffli.
The fact that their exact numlicr is
known shown how well the people of the
vicinity know of their habits and rcn
dczvous. It is even hinted that some
of the denizens know the number of
calves each season, just as the ordinary
firmer knows his Imnd of cattle that
runs on the range adjoining hill farm'
in the Coast Range mountains. It is
suir that such bull elk n s are killed at
this season will lie worthless for eating,
and that it will bo slier waste to kill
them for the reason that male deer are
worthless for use a couple of months
later. If they were to have been killed,
the claim of those who insist they know
is, it should have been hist month. Nu
merous parties have gone into the Coast
range lookink for bunds of elk, 1.1M it
is possible some of them may fall upon
this band. Of course, there are o'her
herds, and the prediction is that the
rans of these monarchs of the mountains
will be sadly decimated by the time the
Ide of October are fairly on. It is un
fortunate that the legislature made uieh
a farce of the law protecting elk.
