ROMANTIC CAREER IN PAST Chris MadKn, Crack Pistol Shot of "Woolly" Days, Rough Rider and War Veteran, Now Leads Prosaic Existence in Oklahoma. CUTIIRIE, O. T Kept. 17. Thie U a t'baptnr rum the Hlury of Chris Mod en, best pistol lnrt uud quartermutler svrgVaiit of tko Fifth cavalry in the Nui'tliwoitt, quartcruiat(r sergeant of the Jtotigli Rider during tlie tipsniih American uur, and now chief deputy under United Ktutes Marshal John Ab ernathy, of Oklahoma. Follow ing the breaking up of the Janus gang in Missouri and on the Kaunas border, remnant of the baud went still further west into the Rocky mountains and many of them remained iu the old lino of business, holding up stage coachei (u particular, for a num ber of )-ar. The Fifth cavalry at this time was putting in a number of vouchee over the mountains, and iu par ticular the stage line to Cheyenne. L'pou Eagle Pass the stage coachei met and at ih hour of meeting there was as a rule, a party of United Slates tronperg toiuewhcre in the vicinity to guard thorn. A leudvr of the James gang rem nant for sn-cral years was known as the "Man with the Golden Tooth." With several of his boldcit follower hi had planned a double hold-up on KuIe pa, liguring to hold up and rob the first coach that arrived, and then complete their job when the one from Cheyenne put in its appearance. On thi partR-ulnr coath were a party of mining prospector, -supposed to have with them plenty of gold, taking it back to the states. On thi partR-ulnr day. Seieant flrule, a companion of Mal-en In the Fifth cavalry, was ordered out with two men to guard the Kugle pass They were sheltered behind soruo boulders just below the level of the pass, when they discovered the bandid gang on the other side. The troopers were but three against eight or ten of the bandits. Driile determined to await the arrival of the first stage and see what would happen. , There was only a short wait and the horses hud been halted but an in stant on the pass, when the bandits surrounded the poach and with cool during ordered the driver and the pas sengera to hold up their hands. As the order waa given, however, a bullet from Sciyeant Ilrule's rille winged the "Man with the (.olden Tooth." and each of lirnle's companions picked off a man ns.tho three troopers climbed over the rocks onto the highway. Seeing the blue coiits of the trooiers, the other bandits (led, leaving the "Man with the Golden Tooth' and two others of their companions dead. t Following' tho death of their leader tho other members of the gang were captured by troopers and tinned over to the Wwoming authorities. They were placed in t he state penitentary, but later escaped by locking the warden behind the bar and stealing all the puns and ammunition. Sergeant Chris Madseu was given command of a squad to trail and recapture them. Minlseu took with him a one-ftyed, hatl'-biced Indian, St. Clair by name, who had niado a reputation as a guide and scout, and Jim McAdams, a long time scout and Indinn fighter. After following tihe trnil ftr sereftil dtiya Madsen and his two comrades riually enmo upon the outlaw camp early one morning. The outlaws outnumbered tho troopers, but McAdnms broke into the camp with a shout and an order for the bandits to throw up their hands Immediately Madsen followed him through the underbrush and after him came St Olair, the Indian. Believing an entire company of troopers were after them, the outlaws quickly surrendered and were all hand' cuffed by MeAdams before they were aware that their pursuers were so few in number. The leader of the bandits was then very angry and taunted St. Clair In particular, offering to fight him under any conditions. St. Clair threw down all hi weapons and asked Madsen to loosen the leader in order that they might fight it out with their fists, but Madsen would not hear of it and the bandits were soon behind prison bars again. AU of them were afterwards sentenced for long terms in prison. Madsen served 20 years in the regular army, and after that was a deputy marshal in the West, serving nnder General Joseph Shelby when he was United States marshal of the western district of Missouri and still later under United States Marshal Cremshaw. 1 Following the opening of Oklahoma to settlement in 1889, Madsen was on the force of William Grimes, United States marshal for the territory. A band of desperadoes had been terror izing the southwest port of th terri tory and accompanied by Madsen and Heveral other deputies Grimes started after them. Grime wa separated from th rest of the posfttt and in riding over the brink of a hill he saw the outlaw on ahead of him, and urged hi home to top speed to catch up with them. The horse proved unruly andplaced Grimes in a position where the outlaws had birn at their mercy. The leader of th band raised his pistol to lire upon Grimes at close range. Just then Madea rode over tlie crest of the hill in Grimes' path and seeing the predicament in which Grimes was placed Madsen also urged hi horse forward and while the animal was at speed, .fired Ms rifle and winged the man that had the drop on Grime Grimes afterward declared it to he the best shot he had ever witnessed, Md sen being several hundred yards dis tant when he fired. After the Rough Rider regiment was mustered out at Montauk Point, Mad sen returned to Oklahoma and was re appointed to a place on the United States inuisshal's force. When Ben F. Colbtrt, the Chichasaw-Choctaw In dian Rough Rider, was made marshal for tiie southern district of Indian Ter ritory, he received word from President Roosevelt to give Madsen any place he might ask for, and later when John R Abrmathy, the wolf -hunter, became United Slate marshal for Oklahoma, Madsen was transferred to Guthrie as his chief deputy.
