Ouestion Arises, Will Battleships be Too Large to Enter in a few Years. WASHINGTON, Sept. 12. Will the Panama canal be obsolete for war and commercial purpose before it is com- plcted and will it prevent the construe- tnC '""''''l -States of monster battk - ships? These questions will be submitted for , ' . , the next Congress to answer. Under the present plans, the Panama locks are to have a width of 100 feet. The two new battleships will have a beam of eighty-five feet. The most skilful tow ing wih only seven and one-half feet of lec-way on each side of these ships would be necessary to get them through the locks without serious damage to the ships or locks op both. All the greater navies are gradually increasing the width of their ships while the big transportation companies are doing likewise. Our naval records show that the beam of war ships is ; increasing on the average of one foot ; yearly. It is expected that the Panama : canal will be completed in about seven years. If the same ratio of progress is maintained in naval construction during that time, battle ships with ninety-two .feet beam will be afloat. Mesmer Mesmer Mesmer Steamer T. J.
