LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11. The Inter national Typographical Union has ap pealed to the Federation of Ibor for funds to carry on a campaign against the open shop iu Los Angeles, which the union declares to be the only free ctty in the county, and therefore In "a de plorable state." Then is regarded as a challenge to battle by the Merchants' and Manufacturers' Association and the challenge was accepted today. This as sociation has managed, on behalf of the business community, all defensive opera tions against strikes and boyco tier for several years. The expense of the campaign has been bcrn heretofore by a few members, but now that the federation threatens to pcup $10,tX)0 a month into the coffers of the local boycottcrs, the association has voted to raise defense fund of $100,000 and meet every move of the printers and a counter move. If the unions boycott a small tradesman or a firm that cannot stand loss of business, the association will make good the dellcit while the boycott lusts. J, on the charge of aiding and abetting a gambling game. Dr. Freeman, it ap pears, was a candidate for Jthe Republi etn, nomination for Mayor. It is charg ed that he backed a citizen of the town fa a game of craps against two negroes, his object being, it is alleged, to in-' fuence the negroes to vote for him. In the 'duel scene in the second act of the new play, "The Christian Pilgrim," now re hearsing at the Hudson Theater, Hen rietta prosman, failing to guard her self properly, was struck in the head with a hroadswoitl in the bands of a member of the company. Miss Crosman got a scalp wound half an inch long. Preparations for the play have consequently- been po-tponed for several days. BIG SUM MISSING. " XKW ORLEAXS, La., Sept. ll.-A $100,000 shortage was discovered today in the accounts of the state tax commis sioner of this city, and the police are s arching for Charles E. Letten, chief clerk to State Tax Collector John Fitz patrick, who is charged with the defal cation. This is the third defalcation in six months in the Louisiana tax depart ment. The two previous shortages to taled nearlv $100,000. JAMES LINVILLE DIES Word was received late last night by Thomas Linville that his nephew, James Linville, who was recently injured in an accident at the Benson logging cainp near Clatskanie, had died from the ef fects of his injuries at St. Vincent's Hos pital, Fortlaiid, where be has been taken. The deceased was well known In this city and leaves a wife and child who are at Clat-Unie at the present time. At the time of his death James Unville was 27 years of age. Information as to the disposition of the body ha not been received lu-t night and Thomas Linville will leave for ChiUkanie this morning tj make the arrangements. The dit trict fair is a bummer, and the attend ant is far greater than waa expected the first day. The stock exhibit would more than fill twice the number of stalls tnd after u-ting up all the material avail able, they have tied horses and cattle to trees and entry cards are sticking on the trees all over the grove surrounding the pavilion. One of the clerks said yes terday he had not Itelieved that there were so many fine horses and cattle in the country as there arc now at the fair ground and they are ttill coming.
