Few even of the old time Uiseball fan could tell who it was who bad the distinction of being the first player to don a baseball maak. Dr. Hurry Thatcher, of Dexter. Me., at that time a resident of Bangor, U the man, and the mask was invented by a Boston man and a captain of the Harvard base ball nine. It was way back in the 70s that the baseball mask wis firt invented. The national game was a crude affair com pared with what it is now, but the principles of the game were about the same and the players of those early days realized the troubles of the man behind the bat. At that time catchers and firstbaseraau's mitts were unheard of things, and those pkuers caught the ball barehanded. It was a few years prior to 188 that Fred G. Thayer, of Boston, at one time a player on the Harvard nine, realised the necessity of a covering for the face of the m teller in a baseball game. He set about to see what he could do in that way, and the result was a baseball mask. It had its beginning then. When Mr. Thayer bad a mask which he thought would answer its purpose he introduced it in the gomes which the Harvard team was playing at that time and of which he was captain and third ' baseman. Harry Thatcher wus "the man behind the bat" on Capt Thayer's team, and it fell to him to don the mask for the first time. It is said that Dr. Thatcher, did not take to the idea, for the players on the Harvard team guyed him not a little for wearing it, as they said it was "babyish" and cowardly to wear a pro tection to the face. So the doctor was not seen often after that wearing Mr, Thayer's invention, but instead used a rubber mouthpiece to protect himself fiom foul tips ami the inshoots of the slab artist. Shortly after Mr. Thayer got out the first sample of his invention, L, Spaulding saw the possibilities of the Thayer invention end sought to get control of it. Finally the matter came to a head in a lawsuit over who had a ngnt to tne patent, f inally, Febr uary 12, 1878, Mr. Spaulding was grant ed a patent. Oakland Tribune. Low Rates East. FAMOUS DUTCH BELTED CATTLE TO BE FIRST REPRESENTATIVES OF HERD FROM THE COUNTY FOR EX HIBITION AT SALEM. 0. 1. PeU'isou's famous Dutch Belted cattle, from the Sunflower Dairy, nvv miles out ou the Lewi and Clark riven were brought to Astoria yesterday for shipment to the state fair at Salem, which opens next Monday. Including the handsome bull, Oyama, there are seven in the herd, the six heifer being: Queen of Oregon, Empress o? Suutlower. Film. FilHt, Fondle and Fancy . Mr. Peterson ha the distinction of be ing the Urn exhibitor of .cattle at the state fair in ClaUop county, and U the pioneer of the district iu thi respect Beside being well represented with his Dutch Belted, he will undoubtedly cause ken interest among the visitors to the slate fair with hi beautiful registered stock. The cattle are the only specimens of their kind in the tate, and there are very lew 01 tnem iu iu t. iu the east. There Is a small herd in Washington aixl few California. Tho- iu the eat are mostly in Pennsyl vania, where me uuuur una tw fr)m. The history of the Dutch Belted cattle date back many generations. Not many years go the clti was held sole ly by few 01" the royal bouses of nul la ikI because tf their beauty and milk giving qunlitiy. It was held to be a crime for any of the "common people" tc po-s them and they were guarded with great care. All the stock without a pure belt of white circling them between the fore and hind quarters, which were coal black, were weeded out until the perfect herd was produced, and it became fain cus throughout Europe. Eastern men of wealth, interested in fine stock, however, managed to break into the "royal circle' by means of their wealth tind secured a few head of the stock, and it is from these that the small herd' in America has been produced. The Dutch Belted, while they grow to a considerable size, have small head and extremities, somewhat like the Jersey stock. But while retaining their delicacy of appearance and beauty, they are spirited ami hardy, being great milk producers. Mr. Peterson is a great lover of fine stock and his dairy farm is fitted up in the mot modern manner. Hi Dutch Belted is the foundation herd for the Sunflower Dairy, which will undoubt edly become famous because of its loca tion in Clatsop county and because of it stock. WILL THIS NEVER STOP? NEWPORT, Sept. 11. Mrs. Aurcl Ba tonyi, formerly Mrs. Burke-Roche, swept onto the tenuis court here carry ing in her arms a big white spaniel, whose neck was encircled with a high starched collar studded with diamond pins. The freakish innovation created almost as much of a furor as did Mrs. Roche Batonyi's marriage to the horse show whip. The famous Casino courts were crowd ed, all the Prince Wilhelm hostesses be ing on hand, except Mr. Ogden Goclet, who is said to have been too fatigued after the recent high tension scire to attend any functions for a while. The white spaniel came in for almost a much adulation as fell to Wilhelm's lot. He was so big that Mrs. Batonyi couldn't carry him any further than the middle of the Casino, but the hit bad been safely made. From this time for ward standup collars and diamond brooches will be the proper thing in dog toggery. , The season bids fair to last longer than any other in recent years. The announcement that Mrs. Vanderbilt and her daughter Gladys will remain for several weeks has kept many in their cottages. The Lispenard Stewarts are booked until October. So is R. Living ston Beeckman, and those that will go before constitute a minority. Even some foreign attaches who attend the Casino tournament today announced their in tention of remaining late "to fend off the early fall heated term" at Wash ington. Sale of Hand-Made Goods.
