He stopped one day, through missing a train, at n com mon little inn at St Germain, frequent ed by laborers and carters. Tho Idea of the story struck blm wblb there, and he began it writing on a cu-uer of the inn table. He remained there three weeks, at which time it was fin ished. The first publisher of the story gave the young author 1240 for the privilege of printing two editions, ag gregating 2,700 copies.
