When the editor of the Woman's Home
Companion commissioned me to write
thin aeries of article. I turned flrt to a
clergyman of national Yame for confirma
tion or refutation of my theory that
the woman wage, earner bad ataincd the
llgnity of a sociological problem.
"My di'ar madam," aaid the clergy
man blandly, "I think this bugaboo of

Huygeated.
Ab, yes," he replied tapping his eye
g'aa on bis thumb and reflectively. "But
this la an exceptional case and very
ad. Daughter of an old oarlxhioner
who died very suddenly, leaving hie af-
fuira in a very bad shape. The girl is
helping to support ber mother and sis
tcrs."
"And she receives the same salary ai
her predecessor, young man?"
i'reclaely! Why nott She I fully a

And therefore must have been train

sort of education la she giving her sis

IIo did not know. We made inqulr
ies. One is preparing to be a book
keeper. The other is already at work i
a fashionable millinery shop.
" ell, welL" remarked the clergyman.
"I am sadly disappointed. I thought
the gin, were going to college or some
thing of that sort.'
It ia an Institutional church, and the
next question was:
"lour parish visitor is a woman t"
"Oh certainly. A college graduate.
especially trained for the work; but
that is quite different. She is deeply
interested in cnaritiea "
"On a salary of twelve hundred a
ycarf .
Well, you understand there is much
routine work, accounts, booka. and all
that sort of thing. A woman must be
trained; she mut have more than ordi
nary intelligence."
"In other words, she must be thor-
uugn. outness woman as well as a
church member and give her undivided
attent'on to her dutiea."
"Precisely. She ia an exceptional
young woman."
Is s lie! Can it be possible that the
reverend gentleman doe not know that
all over the United States, in office,
"hops, and stores, are other intelligent
women similarly trained an dependable
business machines! This girl ia not the
exception, but the rule.
"And your guild for girls!"
"Flourishing excelentlr, under the di
rection of one of our deaconesses. You
really ought to drop in some evening."
I accepted the 'invitation to learn
that the guild has a membership of over
one hundred girls, stenographers, type
writers, bookkeepers, illustrators, sales
women, atudents of art and music. The
majority of these girl have drifted, to
New York from othen cities or towns in
search of work or instruction. Only a
few live with their parent or have any
real home life.
And yet the clergyman did not con
sider thnt these young strangers within
the gate, presented a serological pro
blem worthy of the attention of church
and state 1
