Wc don't think that most men dress badly.
Sometimes they make mistakes, that's all, Every
man wants to dress correctly; a great many do.
We don't make the styles. It's our business
to select the best from the designs that are offered
each season. If "Best" were a comparative term,
we would say that we select the very best clothing
from the very best manufacturing tailors.
"The Best Clothes that are made." That was the
first stone in the foundation of our business. Then we
made the price of our clothingthe Best Clothing the
same as that of the ordinary kind. Most men know our
policy. If you haven't learned it, we would like to meet
you the next time you need a suit or a hat or a negligee
shirt, or anything that the best kind of a clothing store
should carry.

BOOTS WORK OF CITIZENS
ADVERTISING EXPERT ASSERTS
ASTORIA LEADS IN CAMPAIGN OF
PUBLICITY INAUGURATED BY
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
"There U no plnce in Mie United State
with sm'h advantages for the building
of an iinniense toapnrr and the largest
city In the west," asserted C C. Chap
man, who hat been telected a admiral
of the Regatta, yesterday. ; He Is the
leading ttockholdcp in the Chapman Ad
vertiting Companj of Portland, which
it handling the world wide campaign of
the Astoria Chamber of Commerce for
publicity.
"I have been in nearly every atate of
the Union," he continued, " and I have
never teen anything to beat it. The
llrst good Astoria will get from the ad
vertising done by the Chamber of Com
merce is general recognition at to hetf
splendid geographical position and ad
vantages. Immigration and investment
will naturally follow.
"I understand that from three to five
hundred letters a day are being received
by Secretary Whyte regarding Astoria
nd the surrounding section, and must
say that this is the best result from ad
vertising a cityi that I know of in the
business. I have read a few of the let
ters nd must say that the writert are
apparently a much brighter lot of men
than usually answer advertising. Immi
gration to tins point will result in the
coming of progressive men who will be
able to hold their own in any line of
public of private life."
Mr. Chapman stated that the Europ
ean advertising of the Chamber of Com
merce had just commenced and that it
was the first of the kind on record in
the United States. He said that the
usual advertising matter Issued by the
local organization had been tent to the
leading newspapers in the largest cities
of Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland,
Denmark, Xorwayv Sweden, Germany,
France, Holland and Belgium.
lie believed that this unique way of
placing the advantages of a section be
fore the people of Kurope would bring
the largest results in the way of immi
gration that has erer been known, be
ciuse no advertising of such description
had ever found its way into European
papers. Mr. Chapman is enthusiastic
over the future of this city and stated
that the energy shown byi the Chamber
of Commerce would bring results that
would surprise the citizens of this city.
MUD BLOCK MOUTH
OF WILLAMETTE
VINCENNES GOES AGROUND IN THE
CHANNEL AND MOUTH OF WIL
LAMETTE RIVER - IS CLEARED
AFTER FOUR HOURS' WORK. ,
Another grounding has been reported
at the mouth of the Willamette River
the entrance to the much.vaunted Port
land harbor. This time it was the
French bark .VineenneVj wfoich was load
ed with a general eargo for Portland
which stuck in the mud in the channel
at the mouth of the - Willamette River.
She was on bottom' about four hours
notwithstanding 100 tons of her cargo
had been lightered ' when : she - was
grounded two daye before, a short dist
ance above Warrio Rock, on her peril
ous trip up to Portland.
Again the report comes down the river
that the dredge Portland, in its vain at
tempts to make the channel deeper st
the mouth of the Willamette, bungles in
the wayi and the vessejs which are at
tempting to make the mouth of the river
successfully plough into the shallow mud
uid experience the same fate as the
Alliance. .
The Vinccnnes Wat worked off by the
Harvest Queen, who was towing her to
Portland. By slewing her around with
cable and pushing 0n the bow of the
French vessel she was able to work her
off the mud. .
The Vinccnnes, Captain Noel, arrived
in Astoria last. Thursday and proceeded
Immediately to Portland in tow of the
steamer Harvest Queen. A mile and a
half above Warrior Rock she was
grounded and after considerable delay
and additional expense in taking off
about 160 tons of her cargo she was
cleared and proceeded on up the river
when she grounded again on Monday at
the mouth of the Willamette River.
