H:-Followlng tlie resumption of work ou the building of its Athol Hill cut off, south of Chevtunr, the Union IVIlIc Railroad hss announced the JeUlU of this important Improve ment, whirh will reult in considerable aring of time on the Pacific Coast through freight to Denver and eastern points. Contruction of this line will tt!o relieve the congestion of the Chey enne yards. Starting on the main line of the Union Faciflo between Denver and Cheyenne, near Carr, Colorado, the new cut-off runs northeast to Boric. Wyoming, connecting with the nmin line through Wyoming nine and a half miles west of Cheyenne. A branch leaves the main stem between Carr and Boric three miles louth of Cor- lett, connecting with the Wyoming di vision four and a half miles wet of Cheyenne, The total length of the new line under construction Is 17 miles. nd the saving in distant between Den ver and Burioaud points west by way of the main stem of the cut off Is over 13 mile. The maximum grade on the present line between Carr nnd Cheyenne U 1.8 per cent in both directions. This grade by the new line U cut down to 1.2 per crnt north or westbound, with no ad verse grades south or east. The trouble ome curves of the present line are al'o avoided. It U expected to have the cut off completed and in operation be fore the end of the year. Two hundred and twenty thousand iiiliic yard of roadbed excavation, about 30,000 yards of which is solid rock, and 900,000 cubic yards of embankment, are involved in the building of the cut-off, The largest fill is 2700 feet long and 43 feet high. Bridging on the new line coniiat.4 of concrete arches, east from iron pipe culverts and three pile trettles ot 5, 8 and 10 rpans. The longest arch is 135 feet.
