Various report were received here yeatenlay afternoon concerning the col lUlon of tho City of Panama and the Allkinee at the mouth of tlie Willamette river yertcrday morning. One of the inoitt experienced pilots and matters on the river ald last night that tlie acci dent waa due entirely to the fact that the dredge Portland la anchored la such a position that up-atream veseels own not enter the Willamette river proper ly and avoid the Miottl which are near to the lighthouse. Thl was o in tho of tlie Alliance, When tho City of Panama arrived up ami attempted to round the dredge the current muglit her bow. The spwd of the vessel was so great that the accident could not be avoided. To top the engine would only have made it worae. The current Uirew the bow of the City of Panama directly aft of the starboard piurter of the Alliance and ripped a big hole in her. The Alliance had already ran aground in the same manner. The river men aa-rt tliat it i easy for the dredge to get out of the channel and the inspector should insist that this lie done. Both the City of Panama and tl Alliance were bound for Portland when the accident occurred. The Al liance, had Pilot Turner on board while the City of lttnama was under the di rection of Pilot Snow. It took hep 25 days to run to the equator" and the run up from the line to this port waa 15 days. The three-masted schooner Virginia was brought down the river yesterday from St. Helens where (die had been loading lumber. She waa brought down by the Harvest Queen. She ia bound for Lo Angde with a cargo of 700,000 feet ot lumber. The Virginia received her clearance yesterday.
