That's What Counts
The hteamer Geoi W. Elder, Captain
Jensen, from San PeJro to Portland,
entered at the customs house yesterday.
While in port she dischared a portion
X i of her cargo at the Callender Naviga
tion Company dock.

If Uncle Sam hould come to Astoria
and see jut what kind of a place the
custom initpectori have to liouoe them
selves in while on duty on the water
front he would do something for 1m
piovemenl. But Uncle Sam Is a
long dlslanve away it is up to some of
the progressive men of Astoria to ac
quaint him with condition and seeUre
tbe needed change. 4
At the present time the inHpectbrs,
when on duty, have the privilege f of
staying in the shack which the cnew of
the Ui,ikd States Customs Patrol have
ior their quarters while the boat is tied
to the dock.
In former years this bunkhouae was
owned by the I. It. & . Company and
wa taken over with the rent of the
stock of the company when that Una
was taken up by the O. R. & N. Com
pany. But the O. R. 4 N- Company
could not have known what a valuable
piece of property they bad acquired and
when crew of the patrol boat asked for
it the officiul of the company gener
ously gave it to them.
The crew hauled the cabin to iU
present resting place and there it now
stands. It is small and has one room
which the crew stays in during rainy
weather and which the inspectors stay in
when on duty. Thei is a 'phone in the
small room and the shelve have been
kindly lent by. the crew to tbe inspec
tors to keep several of their booka and
papers on. It ha scarcely room for
the crew and in the winter time the
hangers-on around the dock flock into
the warm room and the place is so
crowded that the real occupants ere
forced out.
To, a stranger the place look like a
fixherman'rt hut and f some public.
minded individual will get buay there
night be soon an attractive little office
built (for the inspector and a similar
reitiug place for the crew of the patrol
boat which would be a credit to the city
and the government.

BACK-ACHE
The Norwegian steamer Mathilda is in
port on her way to Freemantle, Aus
tralia, with a caigo consisting princi
pally of 5,000,000 feet of lumber. Her
clearance was lett at the custom house
yesterday. She was bar-bound yester
day. Barge 91 came down from Portland
yesterday and was towed to sea this
morning by the Atlas bound for Port
Ilarford.
The steamer Alliance entered at the
custom house yesterday from Coos Bay
bound for Portland with general cargo
nrd passengers.
The City of Panama was one of the
ninny entries at the custom hou?e yes
terday. She entered from San Fraucisco
bound for Portland with freight and
passengers. She discharged freight at
the O. R. & K. dock before proceeding
p the river.
The steamer Cnsco came in yesterday
for entrance at the custom house. She
brings 500 tons of cargo from San Fran
cisco to Portland.
The oil steamer came in last night at
:50 o'clock.
The Jim Butler, which has been re
ported to have sailed at different times
during tlie last two days, got away ye'
tenky morning. Her destination k Los
Angeles.
Purser Byrnes, who was on the ill
f.ited Columbia is to occupy a similar
position on the City of Panama. He is
suffering from the effects of the shock
attendant with the sinking of the ship
and will not take his position until the
next trip of the steamer.
Steward Funk end Second Officer
Ogerup, of the wrecked steamship
uoiumoia, were yesterday seen on
the City of Panama in similar positions
with the oompany's ship. While the
awful experience that they have gone
through is enough to make any man
quit the sea these men do not seem
to have lost one ounce of their nerve.
