The prize heretofore have not been suOlc- tent for the different captains to get into the game and as this feature of the Regatta, will be inowt beautiful and a the men on the river front represent those who ai taking as much interest in the Regatta as any it seems no more than reasonable that their re quesU and suggestions be considered. . The report that was received here" Saturday night that the crew of the Lurlme struck when that steamer reach ed Portland on account of poor food was discuntcnanced at the dock of the steamer yetcrday afternoon. The crew walked out because they got into Port land hits and would not make the re turn trip as it would interfere with their pleasure ashore. When the Harvest Queen came down yesterday morning from Portland and whistled for her dock the sounds echoing trom that apparatus for signalling re called to the memory of an old-time river captain who sat on the dock the old da.v on the river when the R. R. Thomson was one of the clippers on the run down the river. "That whistle, which you just heard,' remarked the weather beaten old gentle' man, "used to be on the R. R. Thomp' son. I can remember well when I used to hear it when the Thompson was considered the best river steamer in the world. She used to run down here from Portland and when that whistle blew we knew that the Portland mail and news from all over the world would be in in a few minutes. We could hear that whistle a long ways on the river and it seeiUK kind of natural to hear it once more. J. V. Babbidge was her master their ' , The old R. It Thompson is a thing of the past but at one time she was the fastest boat barring the Telephone, on the Astoria run. As is noted above her whistle is now on the Harvest Queen and her engines arc reported to be on the Hussalo. Othe stories wens brought to the mans mind and the following one is worth the telling: "One of the most independent captains in the river was Joe Turner, who was master of the Potter in the early days. He used to come down the river and was for all the world like one of the old time skippers of a full rigged 74 didn't care for anything. Would put on all steam and go a-flving by and in passing a little steamer, or tug would not blow the whistle unless he was good and ready nud in the mood. "Well, one day he was a -steaming down and the tug Jordan was steaming up. Inspectors Edwards and Fuller were aboard the Jordan and she signalled to tho Potter. Turner kept coming on down and did not reply. The inspectors kept getting madder and madder but still the Potter did not answer. "They then ordcivd the Jordan to blow three signals and that stopped the Pot ter mighty quick and the way Edwards and Fuller went for Turner was a reve lation. I don't remember exactly now but I think Turner signalled everything on the river from that time on which crossed his path," Captain Turtier was one of the best pilots that the O. R. & N. Company ever had and as one of the pioneers on the river set an example for manliness and aturdiness which has been lived up to over since by the different masters of the T. J. Potter.
