He whowed that while the city of Astoria was at the present time expending about $1,100 per month in Ms publicity work, that much of this was for the benefit of the ootinty. The mauager cordially thanked the honorable court for Us favorable con sideration, on behalf of the Promotic Committee and assured them that the Committee would try to make thi first appropriation so valuable to the county 1 lutl with next year the county might, see its way clear to budget much larger sum for advertising and publicity work. Many, were present from Mist and us far out as the Nehalem and at 11 o'clock, when the literary exercises were held .the streets were crotwdedj with enthusiastic people. At 10 o'leoek the parade commenced; this consisted of a large delegation of Modern Woodmen of America attired in full uniforms, fol lowed by 20 volunteer firemen; behind the'ilremen came several floats beauti fully decorated with the -red, white and blue colors and in the floats were seated a score of Clatskanie's little boys and girls all dressed in white and each currying a flag. After the parade the people gathered around the grandstand and Mr. Conyers of Clatskanie delivered A short but exceedingly appropriate ad dress of 'welcome.' A. Y. Anderson of this city then read the Declaration of 1 f Independence, in a masterly fashion. 1 Howard M. Brownell of Astoria then followed as the orator of the day.
