SPECIAL MEETING OF CHAMBER OF

AUTOMOBILE ROAD FROM AS

Tlie movement to build a good rou

through ' 'Multnomah, ' Columbia and

trouble wa llmt, to aacertain the l-t
route for the road, and eecotid, to pro
vide the lunchitiery, the executive force
that would make eticre of the move

put in motion.
Although tlie meeting wa held el
o'clock ytenlay afternoon, yet there
were present quite a large number ol
the mot prominent eiliwn and taxpay
eta, mailt of whom owned automobile

Preaidenl Welch called the meeting t
order and th object wa atated by Man
ager W'byte, which wa to ro-ocrat
with the Portland Automobile Club in
the bct way poiible to inurc a ginl
ruad tuitable for automobile all the
way from Portland to Aetorla and Kca
Ide. I'reotdcnt Runacll jf the Automo
bile Club of Portland waa introduced
and itated that hi club would co-op-r
ate with the Atoria Cbaiiilier of Com
merce In any way that aeemed the moat
practicable to recur the contruction of
tbia road. He atated that ao far a
Multnomah county waa concerned there
wa a splendid road already conatruutcd
a far a St. Helen which la just aero
the line in Columbia county. It oon
developed according' to the ' statement
made bv Judue .Trenchard. Mr. F. L.
Paiier, Mr. G. C. Fulton, Chairman F.
A. Fliher of the good roa.1 committee,
C Ryliiggln, A. Shernecku. C. G
Palmberg, W. E. Schlmpff, R, 11. Ith-
era, Preaident Welch and other, that
Clataop county already bad ample good
road to make up her quota of the
through route with but little fixing and
improving
In the dUcuion a to the entire
route which followed Judge Trencbard
wa able to give the mot valuable aug-
getiona and all of t!iev Mr. Ruaell
fully noted for the ue of hi club.
Aa Judge Trenehard outlined and aa it
wa flnallv determined by the general
uggetioiB made the route af thi good
road w ill be from Portland to St. Hel
en, Pittbuig, Mlat. expel, Jewell.
Olney, Astoria and Beaslde.
A for the machinery which will en
deavor to execute the plah fr the good
road, Mr. Ruell slightly cbaanged bis
Idea after the dlscuinna held at yesterday'-
felon of the Chamber. He
had thought that it would be bet, he'
aaid, to hav an association formed for
the purpose of providing the way and
mean, for building the road.' After
finding the Chamber of Commerce to lie
audi a well orgnnixej and substantial
body, he thought that the good roads
committee of this Chamber, a standing
committee, 0f which F. A. Fisher 1
the chairman, and George V. Sanborn
and P. A. Stokes are members, would
be the persons best adapted to handle
the nood roads project through the
Chamlier of Commerce.
As for the right-of-way, Judge Tren-
Imrd pointed out that if county roads
were made p.irta of the through auto
mobile route that.no rights-of-way
would have to be secured. He thought
I this the best plan and Mr. Russell im
f mediately treasured the suggestion in
his note book.
The next move in this good road
project will lie taken byMr. Russell and
his Portland Automobile Club. They
will choose a definite route for the
road through Columbia county, Then
the good ronds committee of the Astoria
Chnmlier of Commerce will join with 1
committee from the Portland Automo
bile Club in holding a public meeting
In Columbia county, most likely in St
Helens, the object of which will be to
secure the co-operation of the Columbia
county people and the co-operation of
the county court of that county.
As for the ways and means of build
ing the ro'ad, after the route shall have
been finally surveyed, there bcciiis to be
no difficulty in the way of working out
im excellent plan under the provisions
of the act contained in Chapter 230 of
the general lnws Of Oregou, 1003, or
there are several other places that ap
pear equally a good.
As it was shown by the meeting yes
terdav, practically all of the road that
is necessary twcomplfete an automobllcj
route through from Portland to Sea
side, must be constructed in Columbia
oounty.' Multnomah and Clatsop ooun-

uch an important enterprise.
Judge Trenehard and F. L Parker
furnish Mr. Russell with tome import
ant p rod lei and maps which he will take
home with him for study. Mr. Russell
will immediately get in communication
with the people interested in Columbia
county and fix an appointment for a
meeting in St
town along the route, and the Clmmber
of Commerce of Astoria will then as
sist him in holding the meeting.
There are now no obstacles in the
way of building this good road that ran
not be ea-ily and speedily overcome,
and there is not the shadow of a doubt
but that thev will all be overcome. And
the citizens can reasonably expect to
lie able to ride to Portland in their
automobiles at their own good pleasure
within a year; and the citizens of Port
land by the end of that time can nuke
all the necessary preparations to ride
to Astoria and on to Seaside in their
automobiles whenever they wish,
