There will be a special informal meet ing of the Chamber of Commerce at 2 o'clock this afternoon, which will be ad dressed by President Lewi Russell of the Portland Automobile Club, which will be of especial interest to all auto mobile enthusiasts and good roads advo cates. And all of these are cordially invited to attend by the committee on roads and highways. Mr. F. A. Fisher in the chairman of this committee and Messrs. George W. Sanborn and P. A. Stokes are members. All three are en thusiastic automobilists. Manager Whyte received a telegram from Mr. Russell yesterday evening saying he would arrive on the train at noon todav and desired to have the meet- j ing for the purpose if possible of pro viding ways and means for building a ' good road between Portland and As l toria that would 1 the delight of auto jmobilists and President Welch imme Idiately issued the call for the meeting. ; Dan Moons and others of Seaside will be in attendance at the meeting and will show that .Sea-ide is in line to do all it can to aid in the extension of this good road for automobilists all the way to the pleasant resort-by-the-sea. County Judge Trenchard hat expressed himself as being moi-t highly in favor o! encouraging this good roads project in any way he can, and Attorney G. C. Fulton, another enthusiastic automo bilist, has given the project study and attention for the purpose of shaping up the best possible plan to insure the con struction of such a road. The committee on roads and highways of the Chamber of Commerce has taken up this question with President Lewis Russell of the Portland Automobile j Club and it will not be allowed to drag Some at One-Half Some at One-Third Some at One-Fourth Off Regular Prices J Our great annual summer clearance sale commences today. The benefits to the property would be so ereat that if it is accomplished, peo ple will then probably wonder why the improvement was not made long ago. The cenie attractions of such a road would be wondeful and as" there are a great many people who would like to make the trip every Saturday from Portland to the beach, it is anticipated there will be no difficulty in raising a large subscription to aid in the con struction. So fa no special route has been chosen for the road and the Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Russell are both anxious to receive suggestions as to the most practicable route. The plan has been discussed between the Portland Automobile Club through Mr. Russell and the Chamber of Com merce, of getting up a good roads as sociation and In the first place hire a good man who would go over the entire route and ascertain what support could be had from the various localities. At present there is a very fair road from Portland to within a few miles of Pt. Helens, and Multnomah county, it is assured will do its "hare, as will also Clatsop county. The most eriou ob stacles in this good road project would probably have to be overcome from Rainier to Astoria. There is already 'much good road out of Astoria in both directions that can be used in this through road for automobilists from Portland to the beach. The meeting will be one in all likeli hood marking an epoch in the local era of good roads and as many hundreds of automoliilists would pass through As toria every week should the project be successfully pushed to completion, it is probably difficult to conceive of a propo sition having more value to this city in a general way than this one. The meet ing at 2 o'clock this afternoon therefore ought to be well. attended. NEW TO-DAY; Oliver typewriters and automatic stenographers at A. R.
