He said that he was drunk at the time; that be had gone battens, coat leas nd with one shoe on to the baifjc to get check that in that condition and shouting drunk he had returned to the bar where he had been drinking and obtained the money. lie says the bar tender knew him and practically that he was particep criminis in giving a man in his condition money on a check. He also added he had returned most of the money. He said that he had been prompted to try to maka his evape by the other prisoners, who were old hands. and by the many opportunities that were offered him. And he begged for the leniency of the court. With regard to the latter part of the appeal refer ring to Me attempted""escape the Judge said that it was the duty of the ofH cers to hold their prisoners and that It was the duty of the prisoner to get.' away if he could. Duke was sentenced to 2i years in the state penitentiary He will probably be taken there tonight. In the case of James Wilhelm, a Greek, who was also arraigned and pleaded guilty, charged with an asault and attempt to kill, the court appointed Attorney F. D. Winton to look into the case. On page 3 of this isue appear the advertisement of the Columbia Trust Company in which they lay before the young men of our city path which if they have foresight enough to follow, means success for them. For an example, Mr. Clark of that company, recites an instance wnicn came to him last Saturday while in Portland. He was standing on the street when a young fellow who had been a school mate of his and a boyhood friend, cam. up to mm with a rroai smile on 111s face and said: "Hello, Frank, how are ron. making it? I'm the happiest fel low in Portland I " Mr. Clark then asked him why be was so happy and he said 'It is the fault of one of you so-callcUl detestable real estate' men. A fellow came to me about three years ago to sell me some lots Holladay Park at' that time. Holladay Park was connid ered away out in the country and peo ple who bought lots away out then were laughed at. Well, this fellow kept after me and liked to have drove me crazy trying to sell me those lots at $450 each 50 down and $30 per month on three. Well, I talked the matter over with my folks and thw advised me not to buy on account of the location, ko when the fellow came again I told him I didn't think I'd buy them. But he didn't let me down at that and to nmke a loiif; story short I finally bought them to get rid of him. I was sore at myself and, him too for some time afterward, be- ause I was working in a machine shop at $3 per day and it kept me guessing to pay that $30 per month. But ' in about one year I saw that things were looking pretty good and I became en- ouraged and stayed with it, Iiy work ing to save that $30 per month I 'saved more and today I have $550 in the liankj have finished paying for my lots a few month ago nnd have sold my lots fop tim ear' on $4500, and thl fall I'm going to Jlerkeley, California, and take up a course of electrical engi neering, and learn something. That real estate man did me the greatest favor anybody could do me when he made mc buy thone lot and I'd thank him for It till the lust day of my life, because, If I badal bought them I would still be plugging along on a daily wage with nothing to call my own. Isn't thai worth being happy overf : I That younjt man's experience ought to he a good lesson for our young jncn. lie will be somebody some day just because he was talked into it. It may not be your luck to happen to iMn up agaiiwt one or those "uctciatie" real estate men and you should not wait but look things up. Now is the time to start. Panama bata cleaned and blocked.
