Dai net Berenth and Ator, 1 A REPLY TO "THE STRIKE-BREAKER" ASTORIA CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL TAKES EXCEPTION TO AN AS T0RIAN EDITORIAL ON A VITAL LABOR CONDITION. Ktlitor Morning Astoriam In your Uue of May Uth, in an ar ticle headed "Tk Strike Ihvakfr," h i described wnrenenting a hlh t)ie of manhood, s a man who etiRttges in breaking a strike biHue he J brave, hecauoe he is "caring for souie cherished mother, wife, Uter or oilier dependent kin," and that "he i a potent fartor in the new future, and his hands Oiould held aloft. " The Astoria Ubor Coumll, the fed eration of the labor unions of this city, ha Instructed to xMse the fallacy of this eulogy of the man who it com monly known as "scab." We therefore most ree'tfully ak you to jjlve space to our communication. We have to admit that the article Is ably written, that In it appeal i made to man's regard for him who brave danger for bis Independence and of bis loved one. But. when the article is closely examined in the lnht of ac tual event, very quickly it Is discover ed that it is simply another case of the devil quoting scripture to compass his ends, that with peculiar Ingenuity "the worse, i mad to appear the better reason." Tn falrlv oresent th trne of the strike breaker (or judgment, it ts neo- esauy to inquire into the causes that briiiR about strike. enae,i upon w oreBK up our unions, Men and women, united In union of murdering and nialmlnjr of these their variou, callings, at time cease railroad worker would continue, work, "strike" either" aguln.t an at- There are now many railroad scci :npt on the part of the employer to dents, mming great hs of life. With th advent of machine production In the middle and latter part of the eighteenth century, the un iona of worker snranf into existence because ccelty compelled) them to unite. Before th machine concentre- "ving xpen nave normouiy in ted production into large factories, the eaed. Likewise trefllc conditions, on producer of an article wa In most ca- account of congetion caused by th ra ses also its seller, be worked In his hon building of .the city, are to crowded In with a f(?w loumevmcn and annrentl- ce, who in turn set up in business for therasclve when they could pass th re. quired examination of skill. But with the coming of the machine propelled by steam, large capital was needed to start in business, large number of employe were required to give best result. Hence factories employing from 10 to 10,000 worker were started. Long hours of labor, from 12 to 10 hours per day, were the rule, likewise small pay. If the individual complained, he was told he could quit and seek another job, where, however, the same condition ex isted. If he took that advice lie was quickly replaced and the grind went on unchecked. But when the workers uni ted in their protest and unitedly quit work when such protest was not heed, ed, the factory had to shut down, and before it secured another set of proficient employes, ti great deal of money was lot by the ovner. At times by the threat of withholding their labor pow er, and at times by the actual with holding of . such power, the workers lave steadily ln nenrly all Industrial, civilized countries reduced the lift-kill-ing long hours of labor and secured a wage that enables tliem to properly ciotiiti and feed themselves and those that depend upon them. . The world' greatest students in the economic field, men like Professor Tlio raid Rogers of Oxford University, Is his "Six Hundred Years of Work and Wages,", and Professor Ely In his his tory of Trades Unions," and a host of others, have fully demonstrated tfliat the trades unions more than any other agency have made ifor the advancement of civilization, ','' Every one admits that the true gauge of a country's progress and civilization is not the wealth of the few, but the prosperity of the many, I it then, any wonder that the strike breaker, the scab, Is despised by the worker who are conscious that in unity of action STEEL cH EWART ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS In Business for Business and Your Satisfaction. Ve make it our aim to do first class work at reasonable prices. 222 Twelfth Street. Next to the Astoria Theatre. is their only chance of Improvement, for given enough strike breaker the employer can at all times impose up on their worker lung hour of toll, low wage) ami condition at, employment which though nominally fr, are some time worse than tho suffered by the laves of old. It Is a well known fact that human greed I callous, that It can only be checked by (tern and united re sidence, . Let u com down to matter of the present, familiar to all observers. When the automatic coupler wa In vented, the railroad manager refused to put It on th car because It meant the expenditure of om money. Th trade union of thl country, through the voting power of their member, compelled congres to pass a law re quiring th placing on very car tf such coupler. Th coupler now yearly save thousand of lit' of rail H1 "'P,'y- fll7 ot ,trlk , hreaker In th land .that could U de- 'wit entflneer. with the throttle In hi hand, along with a scor of passenger, would b hurled to death. Take for instance th strike of th carmen at San Francisco. In that city '" n". certain limit that tH carmen hav to perform during tb day almost twlc the amount of work they did bfor th earthquake. They ask that they be paid 3 for an 8-hour day. Th United Railroads, a street railroad trust which never hesitates' for the sake of selfish gain, to corrupt city official, though it may cot over half a million dollar as It did in Han Francisco, proclaim it cannot afford to pay these wages to the employes and Import gun fighter from Kentucky and from the !um of New York, Chicago, Boston and other large cities to temporarily run it cars, paying these gun fighters $3.50 per day and giving them free lodging and food. Will this corporation continue to pay these wages when the strike 1 broken? Certainly not. It will discharge these men who will live in idleness until An other call comen from some other city to act as strike breaker, as "licroc." Another Instance In point. There are 2000 laundry workers now on strike In San Francisco. Six year ago, when they were not united, these laundry workers, about 1000 women . and ,400 men, worked from 12 to lj hour per day. And what work In a steam laun dry on -a hot day means, only those who have been through onn, under stand. For this work the men ' were paid from $10 to $10 per week and the women from $4 t $7. In some of these laundries there were bunk houses where 'from 50 to 200 women were housed and fed by the companies on food that would nauseate a dog. One half of their weekly earning usually went for such food and lodging. Disease' and prostitution under uch condition were Inevitable concomitants, Slne) organ ization these, men and women have in creased their wagog to a decent living standard, have abolished the bunk house system, reduced the .hours of la bor to nine and an now striking for the 8-hour day. The strike breaking "heroes," should they succeed in de- fflntlng th laundry Worker' Union, would bring hack the conditions exist ing 8 year ago. And th writer In the Astorian say of th strlk breaker "be l a potent factor la th new future, and hi baud should be held aloft." Th woiic of th Fishermen's Union of thl city I also Illustrative how united action compel fairer treatment of th worker, lu 18o6, th packer offered 35 rent per salmon. Th fish- .... . , i 1 i. .. i j. maiided and got after a short strike 03 rent. Thl Increase, f)gurd on tb year' pack, gave the fishermen $134, 533.00 over aad above what they would have received for their fl.U had thty r mlned, unorganlntd or if tb strlkas breaker had caused the lot of tat strlk. Th next year th price set by the Union wa 80 cent for cannery gear and DO-cent for private gear. A U market price of canned salmon well enabl ed th packer to pay thl price, and a alio th packer knew that they bad to deal with the united fishermen, that price wa paid, and tb fishermen' In creased share wa f328.600.0Q. And from th dat of th organisation of th Fishermen' Union, from tb dato whn men wer assured that for their labor they could demand and receive a fair price, really ttart In Astoria ttto building by fishermen of home for Ihemselre and families. Up to that time tb great majority Of tb flther men or th river were sing! men, who drifted her for a few month fishing and then left for other place. Tb prosperity and tb moral of Atorte hav len greatly Improved; because there wa and I a FUherma' Union, because ther were never enough strike. breakers to disroot that union Hundred, nay thoutand other lntan ee could be mentioned, wher the union of labor hav mad for th men tal, moral and economic, advancement of their members and of society generally, while th strike breaker, Ilk tb lie, slsn he li, ba for a few piece of slim always been ready to do th dirty work of our industrial baron. Professor Elliott, tb defender of cast, privilege and pelf, s represented by men of tb Rockefeller, Harrlman and Calhoun type of American, bs called th cb a hero, th true typ of American manhood. II ha been an wered and answered truly that If "a scab I a hero, then Judas Iscarlot and Benedict Arnold likewise were hsro. H. IS. LORNTSENf, JOS. A. BERG, J. F. WFJ-CII, Labor Council.
