REVIVAL OF RIVER TRAFFIC

on a line of freight boot.

viva! of river trnillo. The experiment i

a' ecurd Investment.' The Kansas City
Chamber ' Comineree through aulm'rlp
tiont has rnie. $M0,0m toward the
t il.lishment of a boat line, m thus the
project i placed on a linn financial ba
sis.
The line It the direct outcome of the
Inequality of freight rate by which
Kamwe City has suffered. The railrnJ
tuke the MiUIppl River as a baling
point for rales on freight westbound,
with the result that in many esses
freight charges across the State of Mi
soiiri, from St. Louis to Kansas City
centimes are half at great as the
i .v. ..i
t
.irUe river.
This Inequality ba long been a source
of complaint to the merchsnts of Ksn
as City, and has done more than any
other one thing to retard the growth of
that town. It has placed the Kanas
City merchants at the mercy of their
competitors- In the Missouri metropolii
and in other ways has worked to the
town's disadvantage. It is intended to
overcome this diwriminatiou by the in
traduction of water transportition, and
it it safe to predict that railroad rates
across Missouri, once the line is In op
eratlon, will take a sudden and swift
drop.
Ever since the National Rivers and
Harbors Dngress has brought to the at
tention of the country the neecs-ity of
making navigable the rivers snl harbors,
the activity in boat building and ship
ping circles has steadily Increased. Thl
is to be seen In the report Issued by the
Department of Commerce and Labor of
the number of new vesels of the
United States registered between April
1st and 15th.
There were twenty-seven vessels in
all and eight of thee, or almot one
third of the entire number, will ply the
waters of either the Oreat Lakes or
the inland rivers. The majority of these
boats will lie used In the trnnporta
tion of freight, very few of them being
built either for pleasure or for passen
gers. .
Five of thcne new ships will go into
service on the Lakes, joining tne great
fleet on those fresh water that is
carrying such a vast amount of com
merce. The home ports of thesi five vc
sels are respectively! Cleveland, I)e.
troit, Duluth, and Erie, Pa., two of the
vessels are accredited to Cleveland. The
remaining three boats ore to g5 Into
commission on the streams, -their home
ports lieing Calena, 111., Wheeling, W,
Va and St. Loui.
There are indications that with the
beginning of work by the government
on the rivers and harbors, there will be
a decided Increase In the number of
keels laid for new vessels for tne inland
trade. The passage of the big appropri
ation bill at the Inst session will stimu
late ship-building, for it is reasonably
certain now that the government will
continue to spend ever increasing sums
on this important work of internal im
provement. A Narrow Escape. .
