twenty minute after 10. It wa now
twelrt minute later, and during the

that has ever occurred to me. Miss
Twltcbell's watch has been stolen. To
think that one of my guwts should be
a thief I I cannot but assume that the
theft must have been committed under

shall turn out the lights for five min

Every one looked about for the watch,
but It was not visible. But one of the

Miss Twltcbell for the loss of ber
watch. "Besides. Julian." he said, "If
you wore guilty you might have
got rid of the watch. No, there le
some mystery lu this matter. I bo

am good for the loss. Let the mattor
be dropped."
This was easier said than done.
There were various opinions as to
Reld' guilt or Innocence, but of course
he wns a suspected man despite the
fact that Taylor averred that the af
fair was on attempt to throw suspicion
on him aud was very clumsy, Suzanne
Terry drew away from ber tluuce cold
ly, while Corlnne Phelps wos outspo
ken In bis defense. Irene Taylor, a
slater of the host, from the moment of
Reld's trouble devoted herself to him.
The morning after the loss of tho
watch a mnld went to Miss Tnylor and
said she had heard a singular ticking
In tbe room of oue of tbe guests which
she could not place. Miss Taylor went
to th room and listened. She heard
the ticking, but could not tell where It
was. It was loudest near a mantel
over a fireplace, but there wa neither
clock nor watch on tbe mantel.
Listening attentively, Miss Taylor
located the ticking In the fireplace,
then In the chimney. In the flue wa
iheet Iron plate with a trapdoor In
It to paevent a draft through th chim
ney wben there wa no fire on th
hearth, Mis Taylor put ber band
through tli trapdoor, felt about on th
pinto and withdrew ber bond, grasping
a watch. It wa the watch Mlsr
Twltcbell bad loot. ' .

do so, and Taylor told him tbat.lt must

watch In ber room for the purpose of
Injuring ber. Reld neither denied nor
assented to the ajjegatlon. The party
broke up, one half believing that Reld
wo tit thief, tbe other half In Mis
Phelp guilt
Miss Taylor was oue who believed
Impllcltely In Reld's innocence and his
former fiancee's guilt Mis Terry pro
tended to bar tho same opinion, bet
In ber heart was uncertain. . Reld at
one asked to be released of hi en
gagement with ber on account of ber
lack of confidence In bun and was re
lieved. A year later Held married
Mis Taylor and Immediately after tho
wedding took up a package of returned
letter be had written Mis Phelp and
electing one gave It to her to read.

ground that he had discovered In ber

court here returned Indictments charg
ing J. H. Newman and John Williams
of Durant Thomas Lawrence of Ster
rett, and Secretary Mourtale of Texas,
with murder. They were chargeJ with
being the leads of a mob which hanged
a negro named Jamee Williams, charg
ed with attacking a white girl at Ster
rett, March 11.
