Although the railroad trust, the beef combine, and the Standard Oil trust have ben J and are under severe fire by the gov-j erment, a new trust has been lormea, at the national capital, that will have not only the hearty endorsement but the active support of the Administra tion. Thla is the Science Trust. Sec- rotary Charles D. Waicott, or me ; Smithsonian Institution, has copied j modern methods of high finance, andj the Institution hereafter will be the clearing house for the diffusion of j scientific knowledge. With one bold j stroke Secretary Waicott has amsl-j gamaleJ the National Academy of) Sciences and the American Assocta-j tlon for tha advancement of Science, and brought them Into a close work ing partnership with the Smithsonian Institution as their headquarters. Momters of the National Academy SHenres, which held Its convention here only last week, were Invited by Secretary Waicott "to deposit their archives and records In rooms sup plied for the purpose, In the Smith sonian Institution, where the secre tary of the AcaJemy can have access to them and attend to such business may be necessary In connection with the affairs of the Academy." The secretary of the American As sociation for the advancement of Science was extended a similar In vitation. It has Just been announced that Arnold Hague and Dr. L. O. Howard, secretary for the respective societies, have sent in formal letter of acceptance. The gains that will accrue to science through this consolidation of Interests will be of the greatest value. In the first place, the consolidation will centralise the efforts of scien tific men, bring them closer together In their chosen lines of work, and lend to research that stimulation that coirjrs of comtMtltlon) In) adJJtkm. by giving a fixed headquarters, sav ants of other countries will be attract ed, and the Interchange of ideas will result In great good. No better field could be found for the establishment of this Scientific Trust. The government departments offer unlimited opportunities for in vestigation at first hand, while the Army and Navy Medical Museum, the National Museum, the Carnegie In stitute, the Library of Congress, the Botanical Gardens, and the various noted and extensive collections of sclcntlflo and medical books, all will be at the command of the Investi gators, This field will be enlarged within the near future, when the George Washington University attains the goal It has in view. The Univer sity Is undertaking a campaign to install Itself as the representative seat of learning of the United States. As the University will devote espe- cial attention to its graduate depart ment, it naturally will draw from foreign countries a great number of Kcolars of a solentitlc turn of mind. Thus the University and the new Scientific Trust will work In harmony. At the present time the University Jvas collected, locally towards of 1138,000, with which to purchase a site for the erection of a suitable bat tery of college buildings. Once the amount needed, 1200,000, s raised by patriotic citizens of the District of Columbia, the University will appeal to the patriotism of Amorlcans. in every state in the Union to provide funds twlth which to establish an adequate endowment. Corning so soon after the incep tion of the University ' campaign the action of Secretary Waicott almost Insures that Washington will become the center of scientific Interest of the world. V How Much Do You Spend Every Year For Cigars? You buy a lot of cigars in a year's time, don't vou? How many of them are good ana how mahy are bad ? . If it's too . much trouble to . figure : that out, at least you can estimate now much you'd save and how much more ' enjoyment you'd get if you could be sure beforehand that every cigar you buy would be a good one. j . . . ! We have solved your problem by stamping the 'Triangle A", on the boxes of the best cigars made, We know that by making this 'Tri ; angle A", mean -'good cigars" to you (and we have to prove it with the cigars alone) we get your continued patronage. Isn't it plain enough that we MUST produce cigars thai prove our claims? The American Cigar Company can not jeopardize its interests by misrepre senting qualities and leading the public to expect better quality than is actually in the cigars themselves. The "Trian gle A" really means better cigars for you-and . you'll find the proof worth seeking. For convincing proof of the better (juality for which the "Triangle Aw stands try , : . .", The New CREM&J : Every box is extra-wrapped with glassine paper, sealed at each end with the "Triangle A" merit mark, assuring cleanliness and proper vuuutuvu. - - . . .
