Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Megler, were passenger to Brookfleld as she went up last evening. The steamship Columbia is doe down from Portland at 4 o'clock this afternoon on her wy back to the Gol den Gate. This' will be the first of , daylight-service trips, which will be followed up all toe coming season, and one of the delightful phases of the new summer schedule. The British steamship Irish Mon arch came in from San Francisco on Sunday and went direct to the Tongue Point mills dock, where she will load part cargo of the Immense lot she is to take across the Pacific to Shanghai the balance being loaded at Portland. The steamer Telegraph did not get away from Portland yesterday on the Astoria-Portia rJ run, a advertised during the past week. It Is said she did not get off the dry-Jock in time to make It out, and will enter the run on Monday next The ship Berlin cleared at the cus tom house yesterday, for Xusfcagak, Alaska, being the first of the Columbia river salmon fleet to clear for the north this season, bat the others will follow in a day or two. The China lteer Aragor.la entered port yesterday after a good ran of IS Jays from Shanghai and Hong Kong and went on to the metropolis without any dotay here, leaving up after dark The steamship Oeo. On Sunday last the bar tug Tatoosh started for Cape Flattery with the riv er steamer North Weal, and the latter will be picked up there and taken on to Vancouver, B ,C The steamer Alliance came down from Portland yesterday morning and was well heeled for freight and people. She went to sea and Coos, Bay before noon. The steamer Northland was among the get-aways on Sunday at noon. coming down from Kalama, with Cap tain Betts on the bridge. The steamer Heather, of the light house service went to tea on Sunday morning early, for a duty cruise along the upper coast. The schooner Virginia came down on the lines of the Oklahama yesterday morning and later In the day went to sea and California. The motor schooner Delia went out yesterday evening on her way to the Nestuccs, with a full cargo of can nery supplies; The oil tanker Argyle came down from the metropolis yesterday and went on to sea and the Hay City. The two master Abble went to sea and San Francisco with a cargo of lumber on Sunday last. AT THE CHAMBER OP COMMERCE The second meeting of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce for the month of April transpired last evening at the Bond street rooms, with about forty prominent citizens In attendance, Pre Ident J. W. Welch, presiding, and JameK Wallace acting as secretary in the absence of F. N. Clark. Manager J. H. Whyte was also present. The routine affairs of the chamber received the usual dispatch, and the min features of tile session were) some very wholesome talks on near and pertinent matters by some of the best talkers present Manager Whyte put the chamber In touch with all he had done since his arrival, and outlined some of his best plans for the Immediate future, all of which was pleasantly received and endorsed. He Is making a thoroughly good impression and Is counted to do a lot of genuine good for the cau'e he represents. His allusion to the pend ing visit of Mr. Hammond made a good impression and much is looked for when that gentleman shall have come and made known some of his big projects', in which this and adjoining communities have so definite an in terest. Messrs. Folsom and Fields of Boise, Idaho, were at the meeting and each had a good word to say for Astoria while telling of the means and meas ures employed hy their own live city in dealing with the problems of prog ress.' All they said was thoroughly well received and was fully appreciat ed. They are representative men and seem to have the cult of local boosting down to a scientific and re sourceful point, Several other addresses were made by some of the leading men of the city, and the evening was profitably j "Uncommon Clothes," Always Right !l-iit In the Interests of Astoria.
