Idaho, Showers. OUR "TOM RICHARDSON." By tne flrst of April the Astoria Chamber of Commerce will have the benefit of the trained service of a ca pable commercial agent and manager In the person of J. H. Whyte, of New Orleans, now en route to this city to take up his contracted work in behalf of Astoria and Clatsop county, for a period of two year, upon an agreed salary. It is very essential that ths man be given all the encouragement In the world when he gets here; that his work may not be made any harder than actual conditions render It Let J us all bury our woes and complaints and dfferences, and put hm next to the needs and purposes and dreams of the city .and give hm the hand of friendliness and cheer and send him about our business with the convic tion tnat we have a common cau&e and a common purse, and that he is to champion the one with the aid of the other. A great deal depends upon the spirit V allow him when he arrives, for from us he will take up his cue, and faithful as he may be, and anxious to do for us, he must have the know! edge of our faith, our courage, our purpose, to lend flame to his own. We want a "Tom Rchardson" badly, and we are to get one, if we will but put forth our own rght and helpful inspiration to aid Mr. Whyte. And, ty the way, It may not be amiss for mil hand to study the real attitude of the federated trades to ward the politics of the country just now ,so far, at least, as their best ami highest men and Ideals are concerned, for It is In the over-looking, that some mighty good things" are lost to the de serving: Every man In the country should know something tangible about thtR growing force In the com merclal and political machinery of the nation, and be able to give the matter appreciable consltleraton when he is appealed to. Time Is divesting the or ganisations of their old-time rough edges and coarse domination, and the finesse of good politics Is becoming i yearly the surer and more effective policy of the Unions everywhere. Mr. Bryan realises this, and Is making the most erf It ,: BY NEW YEAR'S DAY NEXT. The preliminary idea to found it with $5,000,000 to be given by Con gress, and guarantee Its maintenance by annual state appropriations of ad equate scope, thereafter, is worthy of wide debate and careful considera ton; the one trmendoua essential be ing that graft be eliminated and made impossible.
