THE MORNING ASTOIUAN, ASTORIA, OREGON. FRIDAY, 2 MARCH 18, 1007. Under the Cross j Original. Ell riatt whs hnring n hard time to moke a living. Ho went from house to house sellSiiff any little article he could get a dealer to trust him with, ' and bis life was passed principally In looking In at doors which were slam med In his face. . Oue day, receiving no answer to his ring at a handsome residence, he tried the knob, otened the door and walked In. Hearing uo wound, he rccounoltered as far as the ecoud story, from a back window of which be saw a woman tn the yard, hanging up clothes. The premises had evidently beeu left lu her care. Tun ing open a bureau drawer, he saw a box and, oHulug the bos. a small for tune In jewels. The human wind Is capable of great deliberation lu a very small space of time. Ell Plan a certaiuly was. lie bad never stolen or rolilnnl. Indeed, he had calculated tlie chances of such methods and knew they were decided ly against dishonesty. The gixv.N were usually recovered, and the thief went to state prison. Piatt concluded to take the Jewels, hide thorn, suffer the consequences of the theft aud when : free man .-iffiiu recover the treasure aud take a good Ions com fort a Me rest, lie decided and noted de!ilHfately, uot on the usual impulse of a thief. That ug'!h he to k the jewels to a block on which the only building was a brick jttnkshop. Somebody had om-e taught him to tind the north star by the pointer star, so he took thirty steps from the northwest corner of the Junk shop toward the north star, stop ped and, with a rusty shovel he found outside the juukshop, dug a hole and burled his treasure. He had been seen coming away with the Jewels and when they were missed mm arrested. Identified and sent to the penitentiary. Seven years later Ell Piatt, Just dis charged, sauntered by the block wmlre be bad buried the jewels. A number of buildings had been erected; but, for tunately for Ell, he recognized the Junk abop, though It was now used for a feed store. He looked toward the pot where he had buried his treasure tad saw that it was covered by the rear end of a chapel The roof of this ad was rounded up to a point, on Which was a cross. If bis mind was capable of delibera tion, it was also capable of calling op pictures. As he looked at the cross be aaw an old woman kneeling at an altar. She was bis mother. Then w himcoif toddling alon? byher To Always Be Sure of Good Cigars Look for this "Triangle A" You simply choose your favorite among the brands backed by the "Tri angle A" guarantee of honest cigar values. Then you have banished uncertainty from your cigar purchases. And whei ever you go you have a reliable guide. Simply look for this "Triangle A" The "Triangle A" on a box of cigars means that every sprig of leaf in every cigar in that box was graded by experts for that one cigar, two years before it was made. During these two years this leaf has mellowed and ripened in great, clean "stemmeries" in an ideal temperature till all its finest smoking qualities have been developed to a degree of perfec tion. The New CREMO will put these claims to the test and will furnish you a most convincing proof. Every box is extra-wrapped in glassine paper, sealed to maintain perfect smoking condition and cleanliness until the box is opened. And now the treasure ho had takei front another and had suffered seven long years to possess was ahcliored by a sacred temple guarded by the holy emblem of the cross. . Life, like the world, Is of two hem isphere. To pass from one earthly hemisphere to another may require weeks, perhaps mouths. A passagi from one spiritual hemisphere to ntv other may be accomplished In a frac tion of a second. As Ell looked up at what as a child he had been taught to reverence It oeoumM to him that It had boon placed over his treasure that no hand should profane It. For what purpose? To save his soul. Ily whom? She who had Ion passed to her heavenly home his mother. In a twinkling he was changed. In a twinkling that which In prison he had looked forward to longingly, count lug the days between him and Its pos session, had become otdy a means by which he might lie rescued from evil. Golue to the front of the chapel, he found the doors open and entered. There was the stillness of a bouso of worship when no services were being held. Several people were kneeling be fore the altar. He went forward and dropped on his knees. Long he stayed Immovable, his head bowed upon his breast. He was think Ing of the old woman who took him to church when he was a little boy how, doubtless, she bad waited while he was In prison for this moment, how she had interceded for him and how In the Inscrutable ways of the heavenly hosts all this had been brought about. Beside the altar was a booth shielded b.v a enrtain in which a priest was hearing confession. When the con fessor came out Ell Piatt entered and told the priest the story of his theft, his endurance for Its final possession and where he had buried his treasure. The next day the priest conducted the chief of police aud a party of worV men to the cel!ar of the chapel. Tak ing up the cement floor, they dug In the earth, and a few feet under the urface directly lieneath the cross they found a box of Jewels. They were sent to their r'glitful owners. A few days after their return the priest s;-nt f r Elj riatt aud told him ttat a lady who had been the possessor of what b? had stolen had been so pleased at trotting her property again that she had sent him a present of $500. There are fifty thousand people lit this country who know this to be true be cause they've tried it. Here's a letter from one of them: "I was all run down from overwork, lost ambition and energy and could not sleep. It was dillicult for me to attend to my work owing to that tired out feeling. I secured two bottle of the New Discovery medicine and de termined to try it. The result de lighted me for renewed strength and vigor and energy came with the first few doses. It's effect was different from anything I had ever taken. I finished the tw bottles now and feel well and atrong again." E. McDade, 839 Dix Ave., Detroit, Mich. The expression "drawing n long bow" does not of necessity memi the telling of a falsehood. It sometimes refers to a wonderful story, which muy be true enough, but which is so marvelous as to require a firm trust In the veracity of the narrator to enable the hearer to believe It. Some of the jongest bows of this sort h:ive been drawn about bows and iiivuws. These storien begun Ions; si go. Virgil n the ".Knei,:" tells of four archers who were shooting for u prize, the mark being u pigeon tied by u cord to the mast of n ship. The lirst man hit the mast, the second cut the cord, mid the third shot the pigeon ms It flew away, lue rourtti nrcner, having noth ing left to shoot, drew his bow and sent his arrow (lying toward the sky ,vith such sppi.-d that the friction of the air set the feathers on lire, and It swept on, like a meteor, to disappear In the clouds. The stories told of I'.obln Hood's archery, Illustrated by his wonderful performance as I.orksloy lu Scott's 'Ivanhoe," are also a dcr-hW strain upon a sensible person's credulity. The famous story of William Tell, doubted by many persons, Is believed by others to have a foundation of fact. There was a Dane named i'okc of whom tho same story Is told, and William of Cloudesley, an Englishman, Is said tb have shot an apple from his son's head merely to show his expertness. Most stories of bows and arrows re- ate to the accurate aim of the archers, but a Frenchman, Rlalse de VIgenere, tells one that shows the tremendous force with which an arrow may be propelled If the bow be strong and long enough. According to his own ac count of the matter, he saw Harbaros sa, a Turk, admiral of a ship called the Grand Solyman, send on arrow from his bow right through a cannon ball. Dorv't Complain. If your chest pains and you are un able to sleep because of a cougn. Buy a bottle of Ballard'a Hoarhound Syrup, and you won't have any cough. Get a bottle now and that cough wwon't last long.
