For the past forty days there has been a vast deal of realty bonding in and about Astoria, notably in bay frontages and closely contiguous property thereto. This is deemed to be a good sign of genuine activity in the real estate market We doubt if it is. In the first place bonding is but a preliminary, and often fictitious step in realty negotiations, and has a ten dency to shrink the market for the real investor and force the values of property beyond legitimate limits. It la to be remembered that all buyers are not suckers, and the trained spec ulator in land and land-values la apt to turn on his heel and seek invest ment at first hand, rather than meet what he knows to be extortion. If bonding for sale must be primar ily Indulged, it is up to the owner to put his property in the dealers' hand upon bonds of stiff figure, and very short tenure; else, by the time the real Investor arrives, what he shall want to buy Is, practically, off the market for him, unless he meets the speculative advances of the man who holds the right of sale first removed from the owner. The process of bonding Is legitimate enough, but is easily overdone, and readily depresses an otherwise free and open market; and, as we said be fore, the only safe rule to pursue, Is to bond for the briefest possible sea son, and at a figure that somewhat approximates real Investment. The mere shifting of the initial negotiation from the owner to the bondee, with the certainty of the sharp interme diate rise in values, does not commend any real estate market to the bona fide buyer from abroad, and he is the man ,and his the money, we want dlnary sum of $4,000,000; Mai quit stuplfyittg when measured by the l' ennial sums devoted to public wrvl In the past, but quite reasonable ' wholesome, if it shall be expended honestly, upon honest ends, for good of the people nt large. This no day of cheeso-parln. The ten ency everywhere Is to have things an pay for them, and "pay like the devil' at that. For a state without a publl debt and the money In, or to be her treasury, four millions is n a great sum; and If It shall be care fully applied to actual, advantageous needs, It will do an immense deal good, publicly and privately. This an era of costly things, and if it takes an odd million or two more for the state to live and operate, she la only meeting the standard her every cltl sen Is facing and she might aa well share the burden with her poorer cit liens. The rich can take care of them selves; at all events they do, gener ally. EDITORIAL SALAD. Behold how lively a real estate market one. little, unconflrmable ru mor klndleth! Twenty-two steamships, foreign, headed Astoria-ward since January 1 A few of them may pass on to Port land. If there Is any virtue In "signs,' there will be something doing In th way of street repair soon, on Eleventh from Commercial to Bond. MERGE, NOT SUBMERGE. What this city wants, above all things, Is an accepted plane upon which can be arranged a strong merg er of local interests; a consensus of thought, purpose, action and means, that shall have the advance of As toria's commercial interests strictly in view; everybody for everybody, rather than every man for himself; some spurring incentive to compel recog nition of the fact that there are pub lic Interests to be served as well as private ones; that we can never forge ahead as a community, by pulling a thousand strings in as many different directions; diverse energies are always inoperative as applied to a single ob Ject One, wide, free, sensible course must be laid out leading to a common goal of success, and the unified strength of the community must be set on that highway, and a loyal, hon est, strong pull made to the common end of Astoria's progress and achieve ment. Thursday's meeting will be the time and place to Inaugurate Just this ex pression and action, and every man whose future is linked with Astoria's must be on hand and take his place in the van of the new movement. o FOUR MILLION8. The present legislature is making old 6regon sit up and take notice. It is estimated that this year's appro priations will aggregate the extraor- Testerday was one of Astoria's "beauty days," for which she Is Just ly famous. The beautiful atmospher Ic conditions acted as a magnet In drawing out of seclusion all the other beauties for which she is equally fa mous. There may be famines of coal and firewood and cars, but there is a world of channel-room In Astoria's gTeat harbor for the fleets of the world. And they are coming! Be it remembered of all men that the Momrng Astorian has "passed up" the question of an "open or a closed town?" The solution lies in very re sponsible hands. We, too, await the dictum. It's a dull day in Astoria when there Is not a bride to grace some new home in Clatsop's midst! MIXES WITH ROTARY. Chiif Engineer of Harriman Falls Into Snow Plow. Lines PORTLAND, Feb. 9. Caught be neath a rotary snowplow and dragged for a short distance with the "fianger' crushing the lever portion of his left leg, to be finally rolled almost into ball and emerge with his shoulders beneath the rear trucks, George W. Boschke, chief engineer of the Ham man affiliated lines, had a narrow es cape from a horrible death near One onta yesterday afternoon. The presence of mind of Conductor Mahaffey and the watchfulness of the engineer of the second locomotive used in pushing the plow are credited with saving Mr. Boschke's life. Froir the statement of eye-witnesses, it appears that Mr. Boschke was stand ing alongside the track as the plow came ahead at a rapid clip to gather momentum for a plunge into a soft snowbank, and wishing to be in the cab, Mr. Boschke reached for the han dle in effort to get aboard. His gloves wer wet and slippery and about the time he graced himself for the spring, the crust of the snow, which was three feet deep, gave way, throwing him be neath the plow. The "fianger" was up at the time, and that fact prevented a fatality. The momentum of the plow carried Mk Boschke for a short distance and then forced his body past the "fianger" ana his shoulder brought up against the brakebeam of the rear trucks. Con dutor Mahaffey caught Mr. Boschke by the shoulders as he was thrown against the beam,, but by that time the plow stopped, as the rear engl neer had reversed his locomotive and hia action was responsible for the other following suit. The overcoat worn by Mr. Boschke was torn to shreds, but a cigar he held in his mouth when he went un der was not disturbed. He is attending to his duties today, somewhat sore from the trying ex perience, but with a better knowledge of snowplows.
