The social events of the week were Interspersed with several uih',lo en tertainments, which both detracted mid attracted from the usual order of tea. ball or soiree. The Pixie operetta has taken, for oil of seven days, many of those from the ranks who entertain and are en tertained. The performance reflected much credit on the participants and man agers, considering the short time which they were In rehearsal. The most striking feature, perhaps, was the Amaion chorus drill which was com posed of many most attractive young matrons and maids of the town and involved several rather ditlieult tis ures. There were other charming ef fects and on the whole the local pub lic was very ottjoyahly entertained, as Is u-ual, with these affairs. The younger set's .lancing club post poned its weekly dance, until the com ing week on account of this. There were two weddings of special social Importance and interest on ac count of the prominence ana popu i laniy oi tui me parties cur.cei ilea, ui-j thouch one of them was a very quiet ;' affair at which only immediate re!a- ever. although It was raining acain. lives and Intimate friends were proa- -'njoyimr two or three hours on roll ent , ers to the accompaniment of the very I g-ood music furnished by the brass Sunday, Mr. Charles Vaughn I'rown j and Mls Anna Kopp were married at the home of the bride's parents in Seaside, as was briefly announced last week. The cottage was draped with vines and ferns from the neighboring wildwood. The Impressive ceremony of marriage, of the Catholic church, was performed by Rev. Father Dell man, and after the congratulations and speedwells, which were showered upon the pair, Mr. and Mrs. Brown left on the evening, train, bound for the Sound cities to spend a short tour. Bergman Kaffee Clatch. About fifty, members of the Queen Louise lodge, and friends, assembled at the home of the Hon. Isaac Berg man and Mrs. Bergman, on Bond street last Wednesday. The meeting was made a special occassion by the event of Mrs. Bergman's birthday, which was celebrated during the afternoon and toasted through the medium of many exctllent cups of coffee, which, together with the pastries of German home baking, proclaimed again, the exquisite hospitality of the hostess. The company were laughingly diverted by the humorous Introduction which was made by Mrs. Bergman at cof fee, of a "new sister" to the lodge, which proved to be a tea warmer, of German manufacture, in the form cf an am'ple-waisted and bosomed Mrs. Katzenjammer, which personage is emphatically of German origin. A very interesting letter was read in honor of the day from Mrs. Foard, who is an absent sister of this city, now visiting with Mrs. Bergman's relatives, In Chemnitz, Saxony. Many gifts were received, from home friends and from the Fatherland, in remem brance of the birthday of this most estimable lady, whose ber.evolence and hospitality are so well known. The many guests spent a thoroughly de lightful afternoon in the spacious parlors, which are perhaps the most remarkable in the city for the pure ly German decorations and furniture which adorn with quaint and price less forms thi" charmir.g home. BACKACHE AND DESPONDENCY Are both symptoms of organic de rangement, and nature's warning' to women of a trouble which will soon er or later declare itself. How often do we hear women say, "It seems as though rny back would break." Yet they continue to drag along and suffer with aches in the small of the back, pain low down in the side, dragging sensations, nerv ousness and no ambition. They do not realize that the back is the main-spring of woman's organ ism and ouicklv indicates bv achinff a diseased condition of the feminine organs or kidneys, and that aches and pains will continue until the cause is removed. Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound made from native roots and herbs has been for many years the most successful remedy in such cases. No other medicine has such a record of cures of feminine ills. Miss Lena Nagel, of 117 Morgan St., Buffalo, N, Y., writes;- "I was completely worn out and on the verge of nervous prostration. My back ached all the time. I had dreadful periods of pain, was subject to fits of crying and extreme nervousness, and was always weak and tired. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable uompouna completely curea me. Lydia E. Neglected Colds Threaten Life. (From the Chicago Tribune.) " 'Don't trifle with a cold' Is good advice for prudent men and women. It may be vital In the case of a child. Proper food, good ventllaUon, and dry, warm clothing are the proper safe guards agaln-vt colds. If they are maintained through the changeable weather of autumn, winter and spring, the chances of a surprise from ordin ary colds will be slight. But the ordinary light cold will become severe if neglected, and a wel lestabllshed ripe cold Is to the germs of diphtheria what money Is to the bee. The greatest menace to child life at this season of the year is the neglected cold."
