OVERDUE BOAT NOT GIVEN UP rive Vessele, Including the Battleship Connecticut are Trying to Find Ship Which Left New York York and Disappeared. NEW YORK, Jan. 9. I'p to an early hour today no tidings had been re ceived from the missing steamship Ponce, whloh sailed from Porto Rico for New York on December 26, and anxiety for her safety increases as the hours pass without news of the ship. The Ponce when she left Porto Rico, carried seven passengers and a crev of SO men. Captain William Harvey, whose home is In Brooklyn, where his wife and daughters reside, was In com mand. The agents of the steamship have not abandoned hope that the ves sel will turn up all right. They be lieve the machinery became disabled and that she Is drifting about the ocean while the engineers are trying to ef fect repairs, or that she has been pick ed up by some passing steamer and now being towed to some port. The Ponce was equipped with good life rafts and boats so that even if she struck a derelict that caused her to sink, as some seafaring men fear, there Is a good chance that those on board escaped. The navy department yes terday ordered Captain Swift, of th battleship Connecticut, sailing from Hampton Roads for Culebra. off tlur Coast of Porto Rico, the Winter ren dezvous of the Atlantic fleet, to do ev erything possible to trace the missing PcJ.ce. C.iftain Swift will st-.-c-r through the areas of navigation, be tween lane!' where the I'm-: may iie drifting. He believes that steamers like the Panama from the Isthmus anj the Zulia from Maracaibo and the Havana from Cuba, which arrived here without seeing the missing ship, may have passed her in the night. None of the cutters, the Onondagi from Porto Rico, the Seminole, from Charleston, and the Mohawk, from New York, despatched to find her, have yet reported. Still another ship was ordered yes terday to search for the Ponce. Gen eral Manager Mooney, of the New York & Porto Rico Steamship Company, ca bled the liner San Juan, a sister of the ronco, saillriK yesterday from Muv hkik's. to vtr from her usual traek mid rake the southern waterways. BILLS MEET OPPOSITION. Those on Subsidy Phillipine Tariff and Immigration are Disliked, CHICAGO. Jan. 9. A dlsvatch to the Tribune from Washington says: It Is now said at the capitol three Im portant bills, each representing a dis tinct administration policy, are praoa tically dead for this season of Congress It Is hinted In each case that behind the killing of the bills there is to be traced u personal antagonism to Pres ident Roosevelt, and a desire to be little or Injure his administration. This Is only Indirectly true. The sub sidy bill. Immigration bill and the Philliplne tariff bill, are all moribund chiefly If not entirely because each of thorn contains certain provisions of a radical character which have aroused the enemity of powerful interests I.i various parts of the country. It is too early to say that each of these Impor tant measures stamped with the ap proval of the President In his mes sage to Congress, has been delivered t slaughter, for any or all of them may be resuscitated at the last moment, by the use of the necessary amount of legislation oxygen. The chances are, however, that not one of the three will pass, at least In Its original form. The Intrinsic principle of each Is so ob Jectonable to many members either In the House or Senate that only the mere framework of the three bills can passed at this session. Effort is Being Made to Withdraw Lawful Currency and Replace it With Illegitimate Notes of Corporations. I'HICAC.O, Jan. A dispatch to the Record-Herald, from Waterloo, lawn, says: Former iiovernor Horace ISoles uddressod the Jackson Club on the subject "Currency Reforms," last night He said; "Our National HankliiK sys tem may have been a necessity at the time when It was conceived. With a naked treasury, a prostrate national erMlC ami an overwhelming public debt It probably was for the wisest s'atesman In that hour of tltmnelal distress to formulate a belter scheme for national relief. Hut the system long since outlived the necessity that gave it birth. "Instead of relinquishing Its hold upon the llnances of the country as It should have done, It has steadily pro gressed In the opiosltc direction until It has removed every safeguard but one. that was originally designed for the protection of the public. "Today it Is before Congress with i measure that proposes to remove the last of these safeguards and allow Ni tlonal Ranks of the country to po ir $'iif.0io.ona of not.s or private corpor ations Into the circulation m-dlnrn f the country without a guarantee ' any kind for their redemption oth r than the personal liability of the is suing corporations, backed by a bare three cents deposited with the Secre tary of the Treasury for each dollar so o be Issued. "Instead of any effort on the part of Congress to comply with both the letter and spirit of the constitution ai Interpreted by the highest court of the nation and supply the country with a currency that Is n fact what It pur ports to be, the effort has constantly been to withdraw, as far as possible, from circulation what little lawful money must necessarily be had, and fill its place with the Illegitimate: promissory notes "f private corpora tions to circulate as money for the per- j sonal cain of Individuals Instead -.f the general welfare of the great mass of the people." was lllcil for probate ye derday.
