Yesterday, the second day of the January term of the county court, was a conspicuously busy one, and yielded some specific results, chief of which was the making and levying of the annua! tax for state and county purposes, on the roll of 1900, at the sum of 39 mills on the dollar upon ail property amenable to taxation, which, with the IS mills set up by the city, brings the tax of Astoria to 57 mills, or two mills In excess of last year's levy and covering the extraordinary item of the completion of the new court house. It Is conceded, on all sides, that the full levy, as made, is very reason able, considering the benefit to be derived from the finishing of the court house, and removing this vexed Issue from the consideration of the tax payers, forever. Following is the full text of the court orders making the annual levy and gives in detail the predicate upon which the Important calculations were made: The court finds upon extrnanlatlon that the fees recovered from the clerk's office for the past year amount ed to $a,897; and other offices, $285, making a total of $6,182; and there fore figures this as a revenue. "The court now being fully advised in the matter, finds that a levy of 13.8 mills will raise sufficient mon eys to pay said estimate of expenses. together with the state tax, and It Is therefore ordered that there he and Is, hereby levied on all taxable property of Clatsop county, 13.8 mills on the dollar for the purpose of paying said expenses and state tax. And It Ik further ordered for the purpose, of raising the amount of $G.0o er cap ita on the school children in the coun ty, the number of same, by school hii petlntitideiifs reiMirt, b'liitf 4.400, and 10 cents per capita for library pur poses, as by law required. It Is or dered that a levy of 5.7 mills mi the dollar on all the taxable property of the county be, arid is, hereby, made to pay Maid amounts. "The court having now under con sideration, the matter of tax levies, upo the roll of 190(1, which x, t,i tal $4,912,000, ami having estimated the expenses for the coming year, to- wit: County court $ 2,000 Circuit Court 2,500 Justice's Court 1.000 Court house expenses 1,000 Clerk's office 5,(100 Sheriff's office 4,000 Treasurer's office ooo Assessors office ,1,000 Assessor's office for ownership plats as per contract 2,000 School superintendent's olllce., 750 Coroner's office r,oo Jail expenses l .000 Collection of taxes 3,000 Poor and Indigent soldiers 4,500 Insane 250 Current expense 2,000 Roads 5,000 Bridges 5,000 Interest 4,000 State tax 21.730 Total $09,930 "And the court, having had bids submitted for the completion of the superstructure of the new court house, the lowest bid for the same being 183,599, finds that It Is neces sary to levy a tax of 19.5 mills to cover same; and it Is therefore or dered) that there be, and there Is, hereby, levied, a tax of 19.5 mills on the dollar on all taxable property of the county, to pay for the same; mak ing a. total levy for State, county, county school, county library and court, house, of 39 mills on the dollar.
