THE MORNING ASTOItlAN, ASTORIA, ORliGON. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2Ljo. LAUNCH FOX IS LOST Wrecked on Alaskan Coast Two 'leeks Since. WAS ALWAYS UNLUCKY BOAT Rmoui Cutter 8nt Out to Leek for HerSearch Hopeleet Claude Hawthorne Bring the Story Home Peeeengert Lett. PORTLAND. Dec. 14. Word has Just reached Portland and the "out aide that the little steamer Fox, which plied In local waters until re cently, went down oft the Alaska coast a couple of weeks ago. Her crew and number of passengers are supposed to have been lost She was running below Skagway and a point down the coast, covering 155 miles every day. She carried Unit ed States mail, passengers and freight UntU the last few days It was be lieved that she was still afloat, merely having been disabled. A United States revenue cutter was sent out to search for her, but found no tidings. The Fox la now given up for lost Just how many passengers she had on board has not been learned. News of the disaster was brought to Portland by Claude Hanthorn, who returned from Alaska Saturday to spend Christmas with hit parents. The Fox was built at Astoria in August, 1S0J, by Captain Jack Reed. at a cost of $4,000 and her short career was marked by the most thrilling epi sodes, In which tragedy took a prom inent part During the Lewis and Clark fair she was operated out of the local harbor, carrying passengers on the Willamette river. One evening In mid-summer while in command of Captain Reed, she collided with and sank a rowboat containing a large number of young people, two of whom were drowned. This affair was one of the principal circumstances that led to boats of less than 15 tons net register being brought under govern ment regulation. In speaking of the fate of the Fox this morning. Captain Reed said: "She was an unlucky boat from the day she. was launched. Something was happening to her so often that I had begun to think things were going wrong if an accident of some sort did not occur on every trip . she made. There was certainly a 'hoodoo' hover ing over her from the day" she was launched." After he had become disgusted with the craft, which had been a source of constant trouble to him, Captain Reed disposed of the Fox. Subsequently she was sold again and taken north to Alaska last February. It is claimed that she was netting her new owner handsome profits when disaster Anally overtook her. CALIFORNIA REGATTA. STANFORD . UNIVERSITY, Cai., Dec. 24. Stanford, Washington, and California Universities will meet next Spring in a tri-cornered regatta on the Sausalita course which will in clude a race between varsity fours, and freshmen eights. The representatives agreed that in event of a varsity eight victory for either Stanford or California the winning boat should go north and row the Univer sity of Washington on Decoration Day.
