The regular meeting of the common council was held last evening, nil the members, mayor and city official, be ing present. Petition for retail liquor license from S. E. Harris and Sunj and Carl son referred to committee. Petition from Charles Wilson and fifteen others for an electric light on Lincoln avenue. Granted. Petition from John Erlckson for an electric light on'llwaco avenue. Re ferred. Petition from P. E. Ferchen, at the intersection of 17th and Jerome ave nue. Granted. Committee on flre and water report ed on a number of claims, which were ordered paid. Retail liquor licenses were ordered granted to S. E. Harris, J. T. Davis, Laxell & Co., and Sund Carlson and Oscar H11L ' The committee on ways and means and city attorney reported on the claim of Captain C. S. Gunderson, for $100 damages, for Injury to his prop erty. That the Astoria Abstract Co. are primarily liable for the damages and that the city would pay $68.75 on the damages provided the Abstract Company pay the balance. Carried. Petition from F. Spittle, asking that a Hen against property in Adair's As toria be canceled. The committee rec ommended the petition be granted, provided that all other Hens due the city be paid. Petition for a street light by John Enberg on 38th street. The commit-, tee recommended that the petition ' be granted. Committee reported favorably on the petition from W. A. Elgner for an electric light. Communication from the water com mission asking the common council to take steps to protect the water mains on 14th street, was filed, the matter having been attended to. Board of street assessors reported the assessment on Commercial and Exchange, Kensington Avenue, Grand Avenue, Niagara Avenue and Bond and Sixth street crossing, and the as sessments were confirmed. , Certificate of Improvement of Com merclal street was filed. City surveyor submitted pluns and specifications for the improvement of Columbia Avenue, was filed. Report of the committee on ways and means on city printing was adopted. Report of auditor and police Judge for month ending November 30, show ing the lines and forfeitures to have been' $1,235. Surveyor's recommendation for grades on several streets, laid over from the November meeting, was read. On motion, the council adjourned until tonight, at 7:30. Clatsop Land-Owner Messrs. . V. A. Poole and F. L. Hurlburt, of San Francisco, are In the city, looking over tome new buildings they have pur chased In Clatsop county, the big Win gate ranch, near Clatsop station. They bought It of Mr. J. P. Rogers, of Sa lem, who Is also with them, the deal being closed here yesterday. Mr. Rogers, who Is well known in this city and county, will leave with his family in a few days for a long trip, from Salem to the City of Mexico, thence to Vera Cruz, thence to Colon and home to Oregon by way of Pana ma and San Francisco. Taxpayer' Meeting The annual meeting of the tax-payers of District No. 1 will be held tonight at the Shlviey school building. The super intendent of schools will make his an nual report; an estimate of the. ex penses for next year will be submit ted and the annual tax levy will be made. It Is probable that the levy will be eight mills. It Is expected this will maintain the .schools for next year and leave a sufficient surplus to make some needed improvements in the school buildings and grounds. Morning Astorlan, 80 cents per month.
