THE MORNING, ASTORIAN, ASTORIA. OREGON. WEDNESDAY, OECEM8ER 12, 1004,' SPAR.DEGI ANDBOuY CosU Rica Has Perilous Trip and a Bit of Romance. DYNAMITE FOR THE L R.&N. Tslegraph Will Net Be Taken Off th Astoria Run Fin ef Altec's Cap tain U Abated Stumir T L. Ward Arrive. Th steamship Coata Rica entered this port yesterday moral n early, it hours behind Iter schedule, from San Francisco, with a fair Urt of pasaen Cera and her hold chock-full of freight. Captain E. W. Maaoa re ported a severe and serious night of storm on Tuesday, off Hecata Head, and which lasted her all th way to the Columbia bar. He caught the full benefit of the gale that awept this coast and waa compelled to hear the steamship to, for nearly aix hours. In bringing her about to lay her In the teeth of the hurricane, his port steer ing gear gar way, and It took aO the skill and endurance of First Officer Johnson and a group of experienced seamen to make the connections again In such fashion that they intent be re lied npon to see the vessel through the stress and she reached .her dock here with the Jury-gw they arranged. She was boarded by a number of fierce seas, the most of them breaking over her port quarter and watt aft, flooding the deck-house and the cabins below and penetrating to the cargo aft. Her after railings and stanchions were smashed badly, all along the port side nearly to mid -ships, and one of her big Ufa-boats was sacrificed In the team In the language of another of her officers, she "roe Just 160 ' per cant In his opinion of her as a sea boat," and all hands, including 'the passengers, speak In praise not only of her behavior, but cf the coolness and adroit seamanship displayed by her officers and men In all capacities. The Incident also had Its romantic feature, since the good little steam ship bore hither the bride of Purser Frank Baker of the steamship Aztec; who arrived here on Sunday from San Francisco, having been compelled by h exigencies of his business to leave his bride of a few hours behind him In the Bay City. Mr. Baker returned from Portland on Tuesday night's train to meet his wife and accompany her to Portland on the liner and their re-union yesterday morning at the O. R. as X. pier, after the safe arrival of the over-due packet, was not the least Interesting feature of her dock-' tog here. Yesterday the business incident to the closing of the Galena matter in this port, was 'concluded. The crew was paid oft. th men who had stood by the ship and her master receiving their full wagea, and the eighteen who had refused to do the work of dis mantling, being mulcted In the sum of fines Imposed by the court of Inquiry lately In session her, plus the pay ing of their own board bills front the date of such refusal to go to work. Eight of the men are going ts aban don the sea and take up with land service, and made the necessary ar rangements through th government agents at this port to this end, yeter- dy. One of the men, RUey, an A. IV. has been missing from the city for several dayv and it la rumored that he has shipped oa board the schooner Irene tor her voyage to San Pedro. The captain of the Galea, will stay by his vessel until the weather mod rates and final decision Is reached by her owners as to her future. The officers of the steamer Telegraph on her arrival here yesterday, depre cated the statements of the Astoria press that she waa about to be hauled off the run, declaring the rumor to be without any color of truth, and that the boat will continue on the line straight through the year. Well all bands are glad to hear H. for ah and her officers are popular In Astoria. and the rumor aforesaid Is her and now denied In tote. An order was received at the office of the Collector of Customs in this city yesterday, mitigating the fine of 1104 heretofore imposed upon the mas ter of the steamship Artec for failing to report his ship in. on her prevtnn voyage to the port, to the sum of US, and the same has been duty settled. Some steamer, no one can find out t which It was, yesterday landed a big load of dynamite at the O. R. N. pier, destined for McOowan's, on the north shore, where It will be used In clearing the right of way of the 1 R. A K. extension eastwardljr from flora co. it will be trans-shipped on the motor-boat Betty this morning, The schooner Virginia arrived down yesterday morning from Portland on the hawsers of the Oklahoma, and Is In the city channel, awaiting despatch to the high seas and San Francisco. The steamer Thomas I Wand was among the arrivals here yesterday from San Francisco, and she went immediately to the Clatsop mill dock, whence she will load Imher outward.
