The Oregon Historical Society has asked Congress for an appropriation of $10,000 for the purpose of erecting a suitable monument to mark the spot In ClatsoD county, made famous as the fighting headquarters of the great explorers, Lewis and Clark, old Fort Clatsop, and the plea is a fair one and modest. Congress has frequently made al lotments for less conspicuous and less important points than this .and, in deed, has made one of $20,000 to mark the grave of one of the seargents of Lewis and Clark's band, Lloyd, who died on the outward Journey, at what is now known as Sioux City, Iowa; and if this may be done for one of the file of the great expedition, how much more should such consideration fall to the leaders and leading ele ments of it United States Senator Fulton has introduced the bill and the exigencies of the short session make it impera tive that every influence in Oregon should be brought to bear upon its successful issue. Every loyal Ora gonian with a friend in Congress, should make a point to Instantly in voke the good will and energy of that friend, toward the fulfillment of this Just and coveted privilege of so mark lng the western end of that tremen dous line of march across the conti nent, as to make it a prominent and interesting feature for all time to come. Now is the time to act, personally, or collectively, through all manner of association, in lodge and church and commercial body; let no one stand back, but lend the mite of his and her influence to achieve this honorable end. Jamestown had $50,000 given her to raise a monument on the spot where the Puritan fathers first touched the boh 01 me continent, ana tt is no more than fair that the other extrem ity of the great realm, its discoverers and potent points, should be made in effaceable by like attention, and the means of making it a shrine to the splendid history of the west. Write letters, offer resolutions, get up memorials, interest your neighbors, and send everything on to Senator Fulton In the Interest of movement; it needs the largess of public and gen eral Interest, if only to show how deeply Oregon will appreciate the gift. 0 INEVITABLE DOCTRINE. At a conference held at Kansas City, Mo., recently, under the auspices of the National Live Stock Association the Texas Cattle Growers' Association and the Corn Belt Meat Producers' Association, the matter of opening wider foreign markets for the sale of products of farm and ranch was dis cussed and the following resolution was adopted: "We demand, on the part of the Congress of the United States, the enactment of sch laws as will enable the government of . the United States to enter into trade arrangements or agreements with such foreign nations as will afford the best possible mar ket for the live stock and the live stock products, as well as other farm products of this country, and to that end, that it empower the President of the United tates, as a consideration for such agreements, to grant, give and make such concessions and modi fications In the tariff schedules on ar ticles of commerce as will enable this government to secure the most favor able trade relations in foreign coun tries In live stock and the products of live stock, as well as other farm pro ducts of this country, while preserv ing the Just rights of every interest involved." ! A resolution endorsing the work of the American Reciprocal Tariff League was also adopted. nose. Remember, however, that no bo ay is likely to discover that you have thoughts unless you express them or put them into practice. Some of the big corporations are planning to Increase the wages of their employes in order to allay the unrest due to the increased cost of living. Never In the history of the world has any man discovered a better cure for unrest than Is the one the big cor porations are about to try. MORTUARY FORECAST. In the next twelve months 750,000 persons will die In the United States whose lives could be saved by proper effort Unless the effort Is made the lives of 750,000 will be sacrificed. Such is the tenor of a bulletin sent out by the Tale department of social science today. Accompanying the bul letin is a plea for the establishment of a national department of health by Prof. J. P. Norton, head of the depart ment He says: "There are four great wastes today. They are preventable death, preventable sickness, prevent able conditions of low physical and mental efficiency, and preventable ig norance. EDITORIAL SALAD.
