land were going to leave Astoria for

.Returned From Bucoda Martin
Fonrd returned yesterday from Bucoda
where he ha been the past two weeks
looking after hi lumber business. He
states thnt the recent storm did little
or no damngo to the mill, but the
freshets on the river brought down
a large number of logs. The mill Is
being run to It fullest capacity fill
ing orders, although they ore some
what handicapped by the car shortage.

Mary Fossett haa resigned her posi

and ha been appointed by Dr. J. M.
Holt, U. S. quarantine officer here, as

Fire An alarm of Are was turned In
last evening at 9:30 and the chemical
responded. The fire was caused from
a Hue In the residence of Mrs, Grime
ut No. 73 Fifth street. No damage
was done.
Seatida Election A. R. Miller, can
didate for mayor of the town of Sea
side, was In the city yesterday and
reports a lively Interest being taken In
local politics. There are two tickets
in the field, the cltlxcns ticket and
the Independent citizens ticket. Mr.
Miller speaks very hopefully of the
result and believes the entire inde
pendent ticket will be elected.
Scanning the Field E. T. Powell, of
the great firm of Powell Brothers, of
Liverpool and London, Is In the city
and domiciled at the Occident. He
represents a house that Is probably
the largest buyer of salmon in Eu
rope. Mr. Powell has been sojourning
at Vancouver, B. C, during the past
season, and is In Astoria, scanning
the salmon situation thoroughly.
Tax Levy At the meeting o( the
county court In January, the tax levy
will bo made. Included In the regu
lar levy will be a sufficient levy to
complete the new court house, nnd
as soon ns the levy Is made, a con
tract will be awarded for it com
pletion. The county court Intends to
have the building completed, except
Interior decorations and furniture
next yeiiir, so that all the county of
fices can he moved Into It.
Death of a Child Edna. Knob-
loch, the fourteen-year-old daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Knob
loch, died early yesterday morning at
the residence of her parents In Un
iontown. She wa adopted by Mr.
and Mrs. Knobloch about three years
ago and was a winning little child.
Notice of her funeral will be given

John Milton Holt, the United States
quarantine officer, has decided to ac
cept the courteous invitation of his
fellow-practitioners of Astoria to en
gage In the private practice of medi
cine, and may be consulted at any
time. He comes to Astoria from ' a
two-and-a-half, year tour of duty at
the United States Marine Hospttnl at
San Francisco, where he was detailed
as operating surgeon, and In addition
has served in the hospitals at New,
York. Chicago, Brooklyn, St. Louis,
Honolulu and Manila.

Securing Logs Several steamers
from Portlnnd have been engaged by
the mill men on the Cowlitz river to
corral the logs which went adrift
