The press of Europe Is a unit In the conclusion that the result of the recent elections In the United States is a manifest expression of the grow ing hatred of the American people for the exactions of the trusts. Tae American press Is hardly as candid, and it knows the truth far more Inti mately, In this regard, than any for eign Journal can possibly know it. We believe the deletions from abroad are correct, and wholly patent to the real situation. We are, as a people,; infinitely patient and abide religiously by our faith In the timely adjustment of all popular wrongs; but It Is sig nificant only of the power that lies behind repression, and Is In no wise a deliberate, or cowardly concession to admittedly Irremediable abuses. Whenever the patience of the people shall be exhausted, and the hour ar rives for their declaration cf rebellion, there will be Instant and comprehen sive remedies Invoked that will clear op the situation in a fashion that will astonish our continental brethren as well as those responsible for the pro test The concern, or combination of concerns, that reckons without this ultimate, is foolhardy indeed, and we doubt If there Is a magnate In the country who does not know. In his heart, that the day Is to come when the spirit of America will confront him with an Inexorable demand for surcease and compensation, and that he must answer by the laying down of his tremendous advantages. It is this very knowledge and the correla tive ignorance of when that hour Is to come, that is responsible for the vast and universal greed now Inspir ing the commercial accumulations of the day. o ROOSEVELT AT PANAMA, The tremendous enterprise on the Isthmus will lose nothing by the visit of President Roosevelt. He is the one man who should know all about the great project, for that knowledge will be Invaluable to the country as the work progresses and the inevitable dif ficulties arise. That he shall be In a position to cope with all emergen cies, lends the assurance of comfort and ultimate success that attaches to everything the man handles. It goes without saying that he will inform himself of the last detail of the work, the plan of operations and the clien tele, high and low, in charge of the Immense proposition and will have a masterly idea of all the potentialities and be in touch with the last item in the undertaking, so that when Con gress or the people, want to know "what's what," they will get it un equivocally. There can be no fur ther doubt of the universal desire that Mr. Roosevelt shall succeed himself In the presidency, for, of all men, he is the best equipped on all the great questions before the nation, to solve the incidental problems inherent in them and give definite and wie Im petus to the triumphant issue of each and all of them. o DISFIGURING EDIFICES. house-owners of Astoria, thnt there be less of the unsightly nnd disfigur ing front-lends and side-leads on the handsome homes and business Mocks of the city; that the hideous dents and clumsy wires In bunches and fes toons, be "relegated to the rear" In n very practical sense. The only place to enter a building with wire Is from the back. We Insist that an observ ance of this rule by both companies will mitigate a distinct nuisance and add materially to the looks of the city. The time Is propitious for the change, and It Is honed It will be made the rule; 'of nation In both Instances, o oooooooooooooooooo 0 EDITORAL SALAD. 0 OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO It Isn't fair to look miserable and rob other folks of their llght-hearted-ness. o A long, doleful face Is enough to take away the good spirits of a dosen people. o Milk taken before and after a bit ter medicine, will absorb the taste very quickly. IN THE CITY CHURCHES. Firtt M, E. Church. The morning sermon theme will be 'VhrlsU Touch," In the evening a sermon of especial Interest to work ing men will be delivered. In addi tion to the excellent congregational singing a larxe chorus choir will fur nish special music, A cordial Invita tion Is extended to the public to at tend. We will give you n hearty wel come and try to do you good. There CITY NOTICES. NOTICE OF MEETING OF BOARD OF EQUALIZATION. 14th Street. Luck In most things Is largely a matter of care and precau tion. If a man has the enthusiastic determination to win he will not stop to worry about what he has to do to "get there," but will take up the first thing at hand and do it as well as he can till something better come along. o Rabbits, which were once the scourge of Australia, are now a source of profit to the farmers. The car casses are put In cold storage and shipped to England and the far east, and there is good money In canned rabbit, too, but the most valuable part of these small animals, Is the value derived from the skins and In fact, so profitable has become this part of the Industry, that many trappers are devoting thi-mselves to it, retaining only the skins.
