Elmore, of the committee ap pointed to ascertain the damage done to the C. It. Thcmson house by the breaking of a service pipe, stated that he had made an examination of the premises, but was unable to decide whether It waa the fault of the em ployes of the city or not. The pipe broke on Sunday morning and As sistant Superintendent Johson tured the water off, leavlg the residents In that district without water. Com plaint was made and the water turned on again and It la claimed that this was the cause of washing away the foundation under the house. The at torney for the Thomson estate claimed dnmages In the sum of $50 and addi tional damages to the plastering In the building. Mr. Elmore stated that the committee could not agree ln the mat ter and asked that It be referred to the city attorney for an opinion. The recommendation waa adopted. The clerk was Instructed to have the superintendent purchase a meter for St. Mary's hospital elevator, the cost of which la about $300. Assistant Crang was sent to ascer tain the guage of the indicator on the first of the month, which fs lo cated on the top of the elevator, and in such a position as to make It al most Impossible to ascertain the markings, and Crting reported that he was unable to do so. Superintendent Berswlck wna asked to Investigate tha matter, but stated that he was no sailor and sent Assistant Johnson who reported that, the amount con sumed was '$4.75, but as the gunge stood at this point the month pre vlous, It was discovered that the in dlcator had not done any work for the city for over a month. When Johnson was naked how he ascertained the figures, he replied that he used pair of opera glasses, aw It was lm possible, to get within a mile of the Indicator. There being no further business, the commission adjourned until the next regular meeting. HERMAN WISE ' BEHIND EACH ARTICLE SOLD IN HIS STORE Will Build Spur A prominent res ident of Seaside waa In the city yes terday and atatea that the A, ft C. railroad surveyors have been busy the past week, surveying a spur from the present depot at Seaside to the old Holllday property, known as the Seaside House, now owned by Mr. Cartwrlghtft It Is rumored that a contract will be let early next week for putting In the spur and that the Intention of the company is to build an additional line from Seaside to the Seaside House, and that a commo dious depot and freight house will be erected upon the property this win ter. This will make the Seaside house the terminus of the road and will no doubt prove advantageous to that property. Street Improvement The certifi cates of the Improvement of several streets were filed In the office of the auditor ysterday afternoon. The Im proved streets are as follows: Bond street from Sixth to the McClure line, by Birch & Jacobson, at the contract price of $5,951; Alameda avenue be tween Columbia and Ilwaco avenues, by John Makkala and John Wuople, a cost of $5,125: Duane street be tween Sixth and Tenth, by Dili & Young, at a cost of $6,055.
