When the auditing department of the Attoria 4 Columbia River
Railroad Company struck its annual balance on June 30th, ktt, it found
that its buine for the year had increased ubtantially, not to say
handsomely, and there are none to begrudee it the acceoa, for that ae
ce mean as much, (or more) to AUoria, a to any point on the sys
tem. The pavenger traffic ihows an increase of 19 per cent over last
year, while the freight department figures to ths front with n inereae

Mr. Lorntsen then moved a resolu

employes under city contractors shall
receive a minimum wage of $2.50 per
day of eight hours supplemented by the
requirement that all employes under
city contract should be either American
born or so' declared, as to intention to
qualify as citizens. This was adopted.
- Mr, Smith then moved a proviso that
all contractors be bonded, as a protec
tive measure for their employes, as con
sidered apart frym the regular bond re
quired for all city work, and that all
employes be privileged as garnishee
agents for the city in the collection
of salary arrears; a measure that was
adopted without argument, in consid
eration of the recent unsatisfactory af
fair in connection with the water
works,
A resolution was adopted ordering, the
secretary of the charter commission to
make a transcript of a.11 amendments
to the city charter, as adopted by the
commission, and also the sections now
amended, and authorizing the employ
men of a stenographer for that "pur

chatting, the Viscount opened the door
of the cage and entered. The lions
pounced upon him and he was fatally
mutilated before he could be dragged
out, It is said he was overwhelmed by
gambling' debts.
