WANTED, TRACKLAYERS!

The country is surfeited with railway
surveyors, and has been for months.
What is wanted now, and wanted badly,
here, and elsewhere, sre gangs of track
layers and bridge builders. With a doz
en camps of these round about us, we
ean take a definite grasp on the future
and count our chances with some cer
titude. The tracklayer is the antithesis
of bluff, and the train the follows him
the king-fact of railroad construction.
They are the things that make men
bustle and catch a new grip on condi
tions. The surveyor is a provocative, in
tangible, unreliable thing; of the stuff
that "dreams are made of, and gen
erally of as much account. Astoria
awaits the coming of the solid, irre
futable, demonstrative 'proof that dwells
in the hard and practical fist of the
track-layer. With his coming she will
rejoice and be glad and make the most
of the advantage he brings with him.

THE POLITICAL POT POURRL
The next national campaign in this
country bids fair to be kaleidoscopic in
a partisan sense; and, in a measure,
menacing to the two great parties, in
the drains made upon the organic
strenth of each. There will be the so
cialists, the federated-tradists, the in
dependents, the prohibitionists, the citi
zens, the laborites, and the mugwumps,
with all their myriads of paltry little
affiliates, besides a hundred-and-one frac
tional groups that can't tie to anything.
It is well within the memory of the
middle-aged citizen when there was
nothing in the politcal field of America
but the great republican and democratic
organizations; and this widespread dis
integration means something. It means
that party alignment and cohesion are
disrupted; that the political bit is be
ing champed by millions of independent
mouths at the instance of brains as self
reliant. It means more, far more; it
means that the republican party MUST
merge in its creed and curriculum, the
best and safest, in whole or in part, of
all these people long for; it means that
no party is powerful enough to direct
the collective aspirations of the masses
and that the greatest and strongest of
the representative integrals, must take
up the sponsorship for the truest and
highest of the innovations and graft
them into the organic system of the
country. The years of denial to these
people and their claims are bringing the
bud and blossom of their hopes, and a
few years more of contemptuous rejec
tion and disparagment, will see the fruit
of their purpose, wrought in an over
whelming leverage of numbers, and vot
ing numbers at that. These concessions
may be made with perfect safety and by
such degrees, as will comfort the yearn
ings of those that hold them, and do no
violence to the vital and fundamental
teachings of the party that is foremost
in the work of good for the nation. The
lesson is obvious, and will bear the
earnest scrutiny of eycry republican
leader, and that without loss of time.
ROOSEVELT, OR DEFEAT!
There ia nothing dangerous,, nor
threatening in the conclusion that Mr.
Roosevelt must permit the use of his
name in the coming national campaign
or see the party he stand for go down
to defeat I It is simply one ot those
tremendous facts that arise, at vastly
lonjr interval, in the history ot the
country, and is but another element of
that history, an element that cannot be
ignored, even by the subject of it him
self; and no man need lose any sleep
because of the extremity to which the
renublican rnrtv, as such, is reduced. It
does not necessarily indicate that the
nation is in anv sort of peril because one
of its great parties is bereft of invin
cible material in its candidacy for the
presidency; but it doe indicate that
there is one supreme duty left undone
by the man whose duty-doing has made
for the condition. Theodore Roosevelt
will not sacrifice one atom of his manli
ness to anything controllable by human
direction; nor will he mitigate, in the
least, his exalted attitude before the
people, by obeying their last, and loud
est call, for his service in the on-coming
presidential term. That the demand
will be made goes without saying, and
that he will answer it, simply, and hon
estly and manfully, is manifestly as
sure. "What else can the poor man do?"

SCOTCHMAN SHOOTS GIRL.
GUELPH, Ont., August 6. Peter A.
Wylie, a young Scotch emigrant, yes
terday shot and killed the 13-year-old
daughter of J. Swackhanner, his em
ployer. Wylie was at work on Swack
hanner's farm and wanted to go with
the girl to a neighboring town. To this
Swackhanner objected and in a rage
Wylie shot the girl.
SAVED JUST IN TIME.
NIAGARA FALLS, N. Y., Aug. 6.
Charles Walsh and his wife, with several
women, were rescued from a disabled
launch in the Niagara river yesterday,
just as the craft waB starting over the
falls.
The launch lost its propeller. Walsh
tried to drop anchor but it did not hold.
Then they shipped the oars and they
snapped like pipestems in the attempt
to move the heavy launch against the
rapid current. One of the women tied
a skirt to a broken oar and the atten
tion of the people on shore was at
trtracted. The party was rescued at
the danger line.
CASTRO FOOLED.
NEW YORK, August C Among the
passengers who arrived yesterday on
board the steamer Grenada, from Trini
dad was General Antoni Pereiles, of
Venezuela. He was released from pris
on by President Castro some years ago
with the expectation that he would as
sist Castro. He went to Trinidad instead.

The Star theatre was packed to over
flowing to witness the first performance
of "East Lynn" by the Lee Willard Com
pany. The piece went with a awing from
the rise to tire fall of the curtain. Too
much praise cannot be bestowed on each
member of this clever company for the
way each handled the part allot l to
them. Mr. WilUrd in the role of Ar
chibald Caryle, was all that could be
dsired, this part suited this talented
actor to perfection. His scone with I-ady
label in the last act, was very touching
and many handkerchiefs were scan in
the audience. The members of the com
pany all did excellent. The costume of
the ladies were a feature of the bill.
"East Lynn" will be repeated tonight
and Wednesday and in Saturdays
matinee.
BALLOON ASCENSION.
NEW YORK. Aug. 6. The balloon
Nirvana, carrying the owner, Dr. Julian
P. Thomas, and the aeronaut. Roy
Knabenschue, made an aseenion last
night shortly after dark from Eit 138th
Street. An hour later the balloon ws
sighted, at an altitude of about one
hundred feet, traveling over the sound
near city plains and disappeared near
Sands Point.
NOTED CHEMIST DIES.
BALTIMORE, Aug. C-Gustavus W.
Lehmann. widely known for his work in
chemistry and becteriology, died yesfer
day in his 63rd year. A native of Wies
baden and a graduate ofthe university
of that city, he was the official chemist
of Baltimore and was one time United
States chemist for this port. Of hitj
years he had devoted himself chiefly
to the chemistry of Hygiene and food
products. He was a member of the
American Institute of Mining Engineers
and of the American Association for
the advancement of Science.
