OLYMPIA, July 17.-0oveinor Mead has been asked to relieve Charles Wright, of Spokane, of the consequences of a bad toothache and will take up the matter within a few day. Wright says that be waa suffering with a severe attack of toothache while out In the country beyond Spokane, and that he went to Deer Park in search of a dentist There waa no toothyanker there, and the young man filled up on cross-roads whisky. The bartender mentioned there waa a doctor at Chattaroy, seven miles distant, who occasionally pulled 'teeth. Wright, full of liquor and toothache, seized the. first team he saw and drove to Chatteroy. He bad the tooth pulled, paid the dentist, but as he started bark to return the team, he was arrested charged with horsestealing. He was sent enced to serve a year in the Spokane county jail. Hs term is now nearly ended. He ask, the Governor to pardon him. SALKM. A large delegation of members of the Masonio fraternity of Walla Wall for the camp last night and this morn ing the Oddfellows left for the scene. Mrs. Brlttain, mother of the child, 1 almost frantio with grief, and is In danger of losing her mind unless the boy Is found dead or alive. In the official en durance tet today ,the battleship Ne braska went over the four mile course at an average rate of 19.06 miles an hour, exceeding the contract requirement by .06 knot per hour. LIGHT DOCKET AT HILLSBORO. JHLLSBORO. July 17,-Judge Me Bride convened the July term of Circuit Court here yesterday. Yesterday was occupied by granting a few minor de fault orders, and from present appear ances court will adjourn the latter part of the week. If any business remains unfinished, Judge Galloway, of McMinn ville will complete the term, as next Monday Judge McBride will preside at the trial of A J. Hembree, accused of murder in Tillamook. GOLD IS DISCOVERED. SEATTLE, July 17.-A special to the Times from Fort Gibbons, Alaska, says the box of gold stolen from the steamer Ida May,, has been found in the woods in the outskirts of town by Northern Commercial Agent Rexman. A special to the Post Intelligencer from Juneau, Alaska, states the democrats today nominated Judge H. W. Mellen for the long term and ex-Judge Swinefortl for the short term to Congress. Mellen is governor Hoggatt'a father-in-law. NEW POSTMASTER AT PENDLETON. PENDLETON, Or., July 17. James T. Brown, newly appointed postmaster of Pendleton, entered upon his duties today, relieving Lot Livermore. The salary of the postmaster is advanced from $2400 to $2500 a year, and an additional clerk is allowed the office, making ten clerks now on the force. HEMBREE JAUNTLY AWAITS TRIAL J! ?- 'mmm TILLAMOOK. Or.. July 17.-A. Hembree, who is awaiting trial for mur der, was brought in on Sunduy from the Yamhill County Jail, at McMinnvllle where he ha been confined, and is now in the jail of the new court house this place, which ha been but recently completed. Sheriff Crenshaw brought him in. Hembree will be tried here July 24 be for Judge McBride. A. J. Hembree is accused of burning bis home at Sandlake, and consuming the bodies of hi wife and daughter in the dwelling, on. the. night of Friday, December 20, 1905. It it alleged that Hembree attempted an operation on his daughter which cost her life, and to cover up this crime he burned his home and consumed the bodies of his wife and daugter. Two boys of the family were away at the time visiting near Clover- dale. The funeral of Mrs. Hembree and her daughter Ora took place in Cloverdale. The remains of the bodi were two wiall portions of the trunk and were buried in a cranberry box, which holds two buwhcls. A few days after the fire an old cast- iron stove was found in the ruins, and in this tove were found what were de clared by physicians to be human skull. To all appearances Hembree does not take his case seriously. MERLIN CLAIMS HOLY ROLLERS VICTIM OF PRACTICAL JOKE. SALEM, July 17.-Baitery A, Field Artillery, is having some amusement out of its practice march. A joke has been perpetrated upon some of the recruits by older members, who induced them to file their claims for overtime with Captain Welch. Claims have been filed by different members for from one hour to one hour and a half overtime. LARGEST HAY CROP FOR YEARS. TILLAMOOK, July 17. The ranchers in this county are busy with the harvest and the hay crop promises to be the largest for years. Originals of Creffieldians Appeared on Rogue River in 1897. MERLIN, Ore.. July 17.-During the fall of 1897 there appeared in thi com munity Lute, Swanson and Beckett, with their families, preaching a new religion, feature of which was that Its con' vents rolled on the floor. When the rainy season began regular service were conducted in the hophouse of II, L. Rob ertson, four miles wet of Merlin, on Rogue River. Lute was credited with exercising hynotic power over his sub jects. During theae meetings the wom en discarded all their jewelry and wore only the plainest clothes. The name "Holy Roller" waa given them by the boys and girls of Morlin, who often went to witness their strange antics, A great many who were under the spell were so ridiculed that they gave up the practice. However, today there are a few who are loyal to the faith, and have their little church and regular service. They have discarded the rolling, Where Lute, Swan son and Beckett went no one seems to know, and the next heard of the Holy Rollers was at Corvallis, where the name evidently stuck to them after Creffied secured the ascendancy. excellent quarters, it has provided for them on the island, which is given over entirely to the unfortunate end will eventually be made the home of all the 5000 lepers in the archipelago.
