VACATION DAYS.
, The season of. freedom is upon the
land. The days for laving down the long
stress of the busines year is at hand.
and hundreds of thousands are alreadv
a-wing, or preparing for the summer
flight in search of recreation and rest.
It is an infinitely good thing, this hark
ing back to simpler and freer conditions
once in a while. Congress has adjuorned,
' the colleges and schools are empty, every
business man, every clerk, and shopman
3 and worker in the land, with few excep
. tions, are setting dates for release and
the joy of an irresponsible interregnum
But we are, yet, far behind the English
in the scope and measure of our outings,
. and the whole nation would profit by a
, closer adherence to their liberal use of
the vacation idea. The pressure is toe
great in America, and its effect will be
come notoriously aparent in a half score
of years to come, if there is not a radi
cal change for the better. The chase of
the Almighty Dollar is frightfully fierc?
in this country and is pursued to the
utter repudiation of every vital principle
of health and strength, , both physical
and mental. It will end in immeasur
able bitterness for all concerned some
day. ,
