THE MOANING AST0RI4N, ASTORIA, OREGON. FRIDAY, JUNE ao, 190O. 6 Look through A telescope at tome Estar Invisible to the naked eye. light from that star perbapa left lurface before the time of William the Conqueror. It tuny be It li not quite Impossible that the tluy star has since those days actually left off shin ing, but still we see It In our sky be cause the rnys which stnrtcd while It yet shone are arriving moment by mo ment telling us the story of what the star was like hundreds of years ago, before It parted with Its brightness. Terhaps, again, wo are examining through a large telescoi! a faint and faroff nebula a mass of whtrllug gases the light of which has taken, say, 10,000 years to get there. We see what the nebula was like in prehistoric ages. It may since then have lessened In size and changed In shape. It may now wear a very different aspect, and men looking from earth 10.000 years hence will be able to see what that nebula was like In our days. All these things help us to understand what the Immensity of the stellar system Is, and, yet more, to Imagine dimly what the measurement and extent of all creation must be If any such star sys tems float side by side throughout the vast domains of space. Chambers' Journal. The Art of Not Hearing. The art of not hearing should be learned by all. There are so many things which It Is painful to hear, Tery many of which If heard will disturb the temper, corrupt simplicity and podesty, detract from contentment and happiness. If a man falls Into a riolent passion and calls all manner of names at the first words we should hut our ears and hear no more. If In t quiet Toyage of life we find ourselves caught In one of those domestic whirl winds of scolding we should shut our ears as a sailor would furl bis sail and, making all tight, scud before the gale. If a hot, restless man begins to Inflame our feelings we should consider what mischief the fiery sparks may do in our magazine below, where our temper Is kept, and instantly close the door. If all the petty things said of a mau by heedless and ill natured idlers were brought home to him he would become a mere walking pincushion stuck full of sharp remarks. If we would be hap py when among good men we should open our ears, when among bad men shut them. It is not worth while to hear what oar neighbors say about our children, what our rivals say about our business, our dress or our affairs. Change la ProauncUtloa. It requires no very profound knowl edge of English literature to ascertain that the pronunciation of the language has undergone a vast change during the last three centuries. The shrewd conjecture has indeed more than once been hazarded that the works of the Elizabethan dramatist would be unin telligible to a modern audience If the native and original pronunciation were adhered to, and certain, at all events, It Is that in many well known passages of Shakespeare the very rhythm of the line Imperatively demands a strange and unaccustomed accentuation of cer tain words. With the peculiarities of a later period most people are suffi ciently acquainted. That gold was goold and that china was chaney dur ing the Augustan era Is matter of com mon knowledge. And who can forget Pope's description of Attlcus: Dreading even fools, by flatterers be sieged, And so obleeging that he ne'er obleeged? The last mentioned mode, as well as the two others, lingered on well Into the last century and was habitual with Lord John Russell, though they are all probably by this time as rare as Roo shla for Russia and rarer than Bpaw for Spa. Chambers' Journal, The Highest Dock. What Is probably the highest dock In the world has recently been completed at Kisumu, on the Victoria Nyanza, In Uganda, at an altitude of 3,700 feet above sea level. The dock has been constructed to accommodate the Nyan za fleet plying on the lake In connec tion with the Uganda railroad, of which the terminus Is at Kisumu, or Port Florence, as It Is now officially called.
