Treasurer (5 per cent of cir culation) 025.00 lfeiiNiinTii,,Mtii and White had met on Sunday night in Burn's restaurant, in Sixth Avenue, and had talked alone together until nearly 4 o'clock Monday morning. Among the witnesses questioned yes terday by the police was the waiter who served the dinner to the Thaw's at the cafe Martin, Monday evening. He de clared Mrs. Thaw was very quiet during the meal, that Thaw did not meet w hite at the restaurant and that White's en trance did not cause any particular ex citement, except ha Mrs. Thaw was very pale. A to Thaw's conduct after the dinner the waiter said: "When I handed him his hat he liter ally jerked it out of my hand, and in putting it on he crushed it down over his forehead and eyes with a crashing sound which indicated that it had been broken by the violence of his treatment." Thaw's Mother Ignorant. Mrs. Thaw's relatives fear that read ing a public notice of her son's crime might seriously affect her. and they are anxious to send her a message before she arrives in London. The position of the Minneapolis, on which she is a passen ger, is such that no message can be re layed as the vessel had covered about one-third of the distance to London when the shooting occurred. The Min neapolis was probably out of the range of wireless communication from Sable Island yesterday. The only hope of get ting word of the killing to Mrs. Thaw is by cable to London, thence by wireless transmission from the White Star Liner Majestic, which leaves Liverpool at 5 m. todav. The Majestic should be within communicating distance of the Minneapolis on Friday. A cable message might also be sent to Southampton and put aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, which leaves that port today. If these steamers fail to pick up the Minneapolis a cable mes sage will be sent probably to the Mar coni station at Poldhu, reaching Mrs. Thaw about 15 or 20 hours before she arrives at London. The Minneapolis will be in communication with the Lizards about 11 p. m. on Saturday and is expect ed to arrive in London the next day. Thaw Acted Queer. "I have known Mr. Thaw since boy hood and I have noticed that in the last few years he has been erratic in his behavior. I have not the slightest doubt that he was insane when he com mitted the deed. Mr. Thaw was jealous of his wife. He was in Ioe with her and she seemed to be in love with him. Within the last few months he seemed to be possessed with a mania that every body was making love to her. "My interview with Mr. Thaw in the prison of the West Thirtieth street sta tion was very brief. I warned him not to discuss his case until he had seen a lawyer and consequently 1 did not seek to learn anything from him concerning it. His first question was, 'How's Evelyn'" The only statement secured from. Mrs. Thaw was one made while she was on her way to the offices of her attorney yesterday. She said: 'The incident of last night is too pain ful to discuss. I am not a fugitive from justice. I am here with my lawyer and I shall not try to get away. "I hope poor Harry will soon get out of his trouble. I did not think he would doit." In the course of today's investigation it was learned that Shaw made a brief visit to Europe last April after a stormy interview with his wifei with the avow ed purpose of never returning to her. The authorities are now trying to find out where Mrs. Thaw spent the time between her husband's departure for England and his return. Her friends say she did not leave New York City. The Tribune after commenting on the alien ist's decision that Thaw is sane will say tomorrow that this fact it 1 now be lieved, will change the defense, and cause Thaw to eventually be brought to trial under' an indictment of homicide, and it is the belief of. Ihe defense that Thaw- has an exceljent .chance., Of Acquittal. ST. l'KTKKsnnu;. .lime 27. With a view of indicating 15uin's financial mid economic condition a compared with 1005, it is announced tint the ordinary government receipts for the first three months of 10Mi showed an increase of $30,000,000. Railway return in January and February showed a diminution in receipts owing to the revolution but in r. ...) Anril ami fiiv lltl1p WAH A total increase of $8,100,000 The movement of lp,tf1 ,t?k.I)U ,n foreign trade from January to June shows a surplus in export over imports of $05,043,500. For the five months savings banks de posit were remarkable with an increase of from $12,500,000 to $57,200,000 show ing that the recent withdrawals are flowing back. Others evidence of the cessation of the acute money stringency is found in the constant decrease in the loan ac count of the state bank despite the de crease in the discount rate. The cash reserve in the bank is $533. 075,000, representing fully 100 per cent of the note circulation. The various episode in the life of Stan ford White, quoted yesterday, indicate that a defense of justifiable homicide will be entered, and Thaw may be able to prove the shooting justifiable. Also that it is understood the famous case of Major General D. E. Sickles, who shot Barton S. Key at Washington, will be held up as a precedent. Sickles was ac quitted without the jury leaving the box. The Tribune savs the statement which is puzzling the police is that White, his daughter, and Corporation Counsel De- laney, and a friend were booked to sail for Europe today, and on the same steamer that Thaw and his wife also would be passenger. Owing to state ments, the paper says, of Thaw and his wife against White, the fact that they ween all to be passenger on the same boat puzzles the police.
