THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OREGON. THURSDAY, JUNE 18, joofc i. Traa Ckoai ltiy. i A lady I met In Ireland related the following facts to me J nut as they oc curred. She was staying at a house Bear Bardon, County Cork. One even leg she was walking up the long car rlage drive to the house It was bright moonlight and nearly as light as day when she saw a tall figure coming down the narrow footpath beside the "drive" toward her. On coming closer she saw It was a man dressed all In black, wearing a tall silk hat, and she wondered who It could be. Ills head was bent forward so that the face was In shadow, but as they came close to each other he raised his head and look ed at her and showed the most horrible face Imaginable. With a gasp of ter ror, she stepped off the path, and at the same moment he did the same and, putting out a clawlike hand, touched her arm, and as she shrieked out In fear he completely vanished. She did not see him go, but he dissolved like mist His face was not like that of a human being, and the horror of It was quite indescribable. Her arm that the specter touched was paralyzed and re mained so for two weeks after. This apparition had been seen by other peo ple, but only at a distance, and but few believed the stories current about the place being "haunted." Occult Re view. Th Grtfk Die. .The gold or silver blank, carefully weighed and roughly forged, was heat ed to redness and laid by tongs on the die. The top was then adjusted and the impression made by mighty blows with a smith's hammer. As no collar was used and all register neglected, the shape, but not the weight, of each coin varied. Tarts of the device were often lost Sometimes the edge of the metal cracUed, and very frequently the Impression doubled. Later on a hinged adjustment of the dies was nsed. Greek dies were not made of steel, but oi hardened bronze. They soon wore and needed continual restoration and deep ening. The die sculptors were there fore constantly at work on them. Care ful examinations shows that the dies were mostly cut with a wheel, like gems, not with graving tools. This re touching of the matrices explains the numerous minute variations In dupli cates of the same coins. Very few are found exactly alike. On the other hand, it must not be supposed that these exquisite works of art are al ways much defaced. The hoarding In stlnct has concealed many that had Just left the mint and that preserve all their pristine exquisite sharpness. One of the loveliest of the Syracnsan coins was found under some lava In Sicily as perfect as on the day it was struck. Ballns lwlterUa. In Switzerland they have no idea that they are essentially Idiots and must have great men and superior and divinely gifted Intellects to rule them and tell them what to do about their affairs. They do not think much of "ruling" In Switzerland nor much of the idea of divinely gifted Intellects. ATI are great men In Switzerland, and one is as great and as divinely gifted as another. To the Swiss mind the great men are those that do something la science or literature, like Agassiz or De Saussure; but they have no partic ular fancy to be "ruled" by anybody, however great. You will find many an Intelligent Swiss that cannot tell you the name of the president of Switzer land. He knows the name of the presi dent of the United States, always, but he does not know who is at the head of his own country. Not because the Interest he takes in his political affairs Is small, for it is very great; but be cause who may be president of Switz erland is not Important Whoever he Is, he amounts to nothing, he effects nothing, he "rules" nothing. The only rulers of Switzerland are the Swiss people. Everybody's Magazine. Age of Birds. The doctrine of vegeterianism ap pears to be slightly shaken by the re sult of an Investigation that an Eng lish newspaper has made Into the sub ject of the longevity of birds. With one notable exception the carrion, or meat feeding birds, are the longer lived. The exception is the swan. The average ages of some of the best known birds are given In the follow ing: Blackbird lives 12 years, black cap 15, canary 24, crane 24, crow 100, eagle 100, fowl, common, 10; goldflncn 15, goose 50, heron 59, lark 13, linnet 23, nightingale 18, parrot 60, partridge 15, peacock 24, pelican 50, pheasant 15, pigeon 20, raven 100, robin 12, skylark 80, sparrow hawk 40, swan 100, thrush 10 and wren 3 years. How Arnold Studied Logic. Here . Is an interesting story told In the life of Archbishop Temple: Matthew Arnold got leave, at the last moment, to take In "Logic For Respon Blons" Instead of "Euclid," which he could never master. The day before the examination he went to Jowett, who was his tutor, and asked how he could learn the subject In time, as he was wholly Ignorant of It. Jowett said his only chance was to go to Temple and see if he would try to teach him In one day. Temple consented and, start ing about 9 o'clock in the morning, talked continuously, allowing two .pauses of half an hour each for meals, till past 2 o'clock next morning. Ar nold had been provided with paper, but took no notes. He lay back In his chair with the tips of his fingers to gether, saying from time to time, "What wonderful fellows they werel" Soon after 2 o'clock a. m. Temple sent Arnold away to get some sleep, after which be satisfied the examiners In logic. He answered -every question, RECEIVER'S NOTICE.
