"I THE PANAMA CANAL.
The figbt U practically off. in Wash
ington, upon the long-drawn-out ques
tion as to whether the Panama canal
should be a lock canal or a sea-level
canal; the President has had his way,
as he usually has it, because it is the
right way, and the canal will be a twin
lock canal. So far, so good. But what
this country wants is the Panama
canaL It wants it just as the Texan
"wanted his pistols." Therefore, the
sooner the commission gets down to
actual business and builds the great
ditch, the better it will be for this and
all other nations. That it has not been
a well-defined piece of work long ago.
is owing, of course, to the warfare of the
railroads, but the country is getting
woefully tired of that, and when the
country gets real weary of anything,
there is bound to be swift and subse
quent '"doin's," and this is a case in
point. Dirt will fly with vigor and
speed from now on! Even Astoria will
be directly and notably benefitted by the
consummation of this magnificent enter
prise. 0

plainly aparent. We are glad, infinitely
glad, of thi. It is bad enough to have
the ouus of its development in our
midst, without the additional disgrace
of our citizenry being mixed up, and
proclaimed, in their dangerous and
dirty program. That some few foolish.
weak and easily-led Americans are in
voled in the cult, no one will deny 5 but
tor the vastly greater part they are
made up of the debris dumped upon the
coasts of the country, from lands where
they are no longer tolerated, and
whose police are directly responsible for
the exodus thence. The unfolding of the
personnel of the brood always shows the
foreign trend and the lowest phases of
that. There are three things that should
be constantly invoked in behalf of the
suppression of these evil people, namely,
the insane asylums, the extradition
penalties, ud the penitentaries.

William Jennings Bryan, the "Peren
nial," lias sounded his new slogan! It
is a cold day when the redundant Wil
liam cannot produce a ringing war-cry
from the swirl of bis accumulated dic
tion. This year -it is that the "Tru-t3
are burglars" and that he intends to
treat them as such just as soon as he
is elected to the Presidency (?), (?), (?).
Now, considering the strenuous and de
tailed nianntfl- in which his predece-sor,
Theadore Roosevelt, has been digging
into the clan, and the meagre, yet ac
ceptable, results attained, William will
find that his slogan is the most active
element of his engagement; but this can
hardly disconcert William, since he, and
the country at large, have long since
recognized "hot air" as the one keen
phase of his electoral battles. It is
hardly necessary to observe that the
trusts are facing the probabilities of an
nihiliation at his hands with an equani
mity wholly justifiable. "First catch
your presidency," etc., etc.

v A RUSH OF GOOD THINGS.
Just at this moment Astoria is over
whelmed with a plethora of good things;
some underway; some due to arrive;
all of inestimable value to the city;
with the new hotel in the lead. And
while there seems to be a remarkable
Bimultaneousness in the garnering of the
harvest that is making it a bit hard for
the generous citizens to meet with entire
complacency the demands of the hour,
there can be no doubt they will cover
the whole ground, allowing nothing to
go by default in the list of advantages
so imminent. Nothing comes except by
hard knocks, anyway, and it is idle to
discriminate as to the time and manner
of their coming. The main thing is to
seize them while they are seizable, what
ever the volumne of cost, and then settle
down to the enjoyment and profit
Wrought by the sacrifice.

proved its healing qualities several years
ago Iheu I used and told in a published
statement the great relief and cure I
obtained from it, I used it for a break

had troubled nn for a number of years,
despite all I could do to get rid of it.
My lips would crack and become sore
when cold weather set in. and this lasted
until it got warm again. I was finally

Many people who are neglecting symptoms of kidney trouble, hoping "it will wear away," are
drifting towards Bright' s Disease, which is kidney trouble in one of its worst forms.
TK.
stops irregularities, strengthens the urinary organs and builds up the worn-out tissues
of the kidneys so they will perform their functions properly. Healthy kidneys strain out
the impurities from the blood as it passes through them. Diseased kidneys do not, and
tne poisonous waste matter is camea oy tne circulation to every part of the body,
causing dizziness, backache, stomach trouble, sluggish liver, irregular heart action, etc
If you have any signs of Kidney or Bladder Trouble commence taking FOLEY'S
KIDNEY CURE at once, as it will cure a slight disorder in a few days and prevent a
fatal malady. It is pleasant to take and benefits the whole system.
How to Find Out
Yon can easily determine if your kidneys are
out of order by setting aside for 24 hours a
bottle of the urine passed upon arising. If
upon examination it is cloudy or milky or has
a brick-dust sediment or small particles float
about in it, your kidneys are diseased, and
FOLEY'S KIDNEY CURE should be taken
at once.
