BOOZE AND BUSINESS.
It is an eternal fact that booze and
business will not mix. No amount of
coaching and coaxing can harmonize the
two, with any degree of permanence
and success; there may be an apparent
running together for a time, but like oil
and water, after the shaking that merges
them, .the settling process will find them
as far asunder as ever. In this wide
open town there are k number of people
trying pretty hard to reconcile the two
and running away with the idea that
they are succeeding, but the demonstra
tion , of their failure is not far off, and
the same. old potent fact will be thrust
in their .faces with humiliating and
startling suddenness; especially those of
the younger sort who have not yet
learned the lesson inseparable from the
experiment. . Some men recognize the
issue in such cases and make good use
of it in the future; othfrs are prone to
tet the thing over and over again to
their utter undoing. The note of warn
ing is thrown away upon the latter, but
the wideawake, clean-minded youngster
will not hesitate long in selecting the
surer and more wholesome course that
trends away from the booze and hugs
the shore-line of safe and honest business.
HER DAY IN COURT.
With an up-to-date and applicable
charter under formulation; a new and
elegent hotel practically secured; nego
tiations closed for the building, lease,
and operation of a fine new opera house;
the installation of splendid and modern
additions to the electric light and power
system of the city; and new 20,000,000
galloh water reservoir underway; an
automatic telephone service under
franchise, and its introduction guar
anteed; the regular telephone system to
be wholly built over and modernized;
the new home of the Astoria Savings
Bank well started; and a current outgo
of $100,000 for new homes, great and
small, all over the city, Astoria's day
in the court of progress cannot be de
nied, and she will make the most of it.
Not many towns in the state can make
a better showing and the best of it is
there is more of the same sort coming,
surely and rapidly, and due to arrive
without any notable hiatus in its pro
gresve gait. Astoria's all right!

The Purely Money Loving
Class Is Unfit to Rule
By WILLIAM M. 1V1NS, Lite R.publUist Candidate for Mayor of New Vara
HE question for us to ask as a nation ia, knowing that we love
monev and knowing the noble use of it, What do we love
MORE THAN MONEY I Is it liberty 1 The facta do not
show it, because I believe it to be the fact that, as a people
todav, we are suffering socially and politically from the TYRANNY
OF ILL GOTTEN WEALTH; and yet we are not prepared as a
people (for "society," so called, is no port of the people, but the mere
rotten fruit of the tree of prosperity), we are as a people, I aay, not
prepared to take off our hats to MERE WEALTH. There is no
surer truth than that the purely money loving class is from every
point of view, in character, in temperament and in training, unfit to
rule or to direct any nation, and yet it comes dangerously near BOTH
DIRECTING AND RULING ours, and the scepter by which we
are actually, if not theoretically, governed is not the scepter of democ
racy, but the ignoble scepter of finance, exploiting the people and cor
rupting its representation.
I he chief disqualification of the money hungry to rule a state is
their inappreciation of their complete inability to reach or to influ
ence our NOBLER INSTINCTS. I may add their indifference to
and utter disregard of them. What the politician loves is the mini
mum of effort with the maximum of talk, and he so hates a licking that
he is sure finally to do what he is told. As it is today, however, it is
by this class and not by the great, silent, laborious majority, whose
will is SYSTEMATICALLY FRUSTRATED, that as a nation we
are judged and not infrequently despised because so many of this class
are so vulgar and despicable, although so many are men of culture
and personal charm.
We may admit as the final ugly fact that "the whole prosperity of
a people is built up on interest and never upon sentiment." But ono
part of the people knows and is eternally vigilant of its interests, and
another part either DOES NOT KNOW or is lacking in vigilance.
But the vigilant interests may not be the interests of the community,
and these latter thus come to be wholly disregarded or misrepresented
in our legislatures and by our executive official. But professional
politicians are TIME SERVERS and are generally moral cowards.
THIS IS SOMETHING TO BE THANKFUL FOR, BECAUSE IT
MAKES THEM LESS DANGEROUS DIRECTLY AS THEY ARE MORE
TIMID AND LEADS THEM TC KEEP THEIR EARS CLOSE TO THE
GROUND.
