our convictions in favor of the republi
can ticket. We believe there are enough
votes in the clean-up to justify our san
guine hope for Dr. Withycombe. The
returns at hand do not include the limits
of lis real support from the agricultural
sources in the state. And it is the glow
moving count that usually furnishes the
surprises. We have lot our zest for
huge majorities and will be perfectly
satisfied with the most meagre sum of
ascendancy that falls our way. There
is much to be admitted as to the extra
ordinary personality of the present gov
ernor and the superb use he has made of
it .and this is the extent of our present
surrender, until the official count shall
make us yield him more.
As to the county we have much to be
cheerful about. The defeat of J. A.
Eakin, for the county judgeship is the
gravest of our disappointments, but the
election of Mr. Masten carries a measure
of compensation that affords the comfort
inherent in the conclusion that the pre
siding judge will take more orders in the
republican commissioner' court than he
will give, a state of affairs that is cer
tain to redound to the economic advant
age of the county at large and the in
dividual taxpayer as well. The election
of Mr. Pohl is another of the short-coming
in the pri'Kpectjve that had been
set up, but will work no severer disad
vantage than the nec4ury break in the
straight ticket.

ter of the county content has been de
cided wa mont devoutly hoped for.

anomaly of two or three contentious
democrats interfering with the plans and
processes of a dominant state adminis
tration and thwarting the issue of whole
some legislation, is at an end in Clatsop,
for good and all. And this very circum
stance carries with it another pleasing
feature in the demonstration it makes
of the practical unanimity of the repub
lican party and the solid work that has
been done here this time, to this end,
and to the unification of the forces in
Clatsop, a consummation that means
much for its political future and the
Tbenefits resultant from harmony and
practical understanding.
Taken as a whole, and still holding the
election of Mr. Chamberlain as an nn-
determined element, the election ha
brought no serious drawbacks to Clat
sop, and hag yielded some distinct gains,
for all of which we are duly thankful,
and now, there remains nothing to do
but go ahead with the long-delayed items
of public and commercial interest, to As
toria, and the county at large; doing all
that we may for them and for the
State of Oregon, and, in this particular,
"just watch our smoke."
and push, in any tangible effort that
will put that great barrier in a state of
efficiency for the passage of truffle even
if the last lottom must go by our door
to Portland; because, upon the hypothe
sis that SOMETHING must accrue from
the general access of business that comes
to the neighborhood, and we re going
after our share. The sooner the federal
quartermaster's department, and the
pilot's association and the Port of Port
land commission, merge their three fold
power for good in this relation, the
sooner will Astoria begin to pro rate on
the good things to come.
COMING TO THE FRONT.
In various ways, of late, the bar at
the mouth of the Columbia is becoming
an object of governmental and profes
sional solicitude, as to the shallowing
of the channel water on its "ret, and
we are glad of it. The Columbia, bar
