O O 0 0 Western Oregon and Washing- 0 O ton Fair and wanner. 0 OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO REACTION INEVITABLE. The history of the San Francisco hor ror to date is replete with instances of communal bravery, wisdom and level headedness, very rare in such tremen dous emergencies, and wholly to th. credit of the people affected. But, the Bupreme test of the reaction is to come, and the patience, nerve and stability of the populace to b tried to the utmost. Without the current excitement of the hour, great and laborious work is to be done; hideous things to be uncover ed; personal interest to be invaded, jeopardized and minimized for the pub lice good; radical steps to be taken; new conditions and lines of civic control set up and established! the customs of half a century will be lacking to maintain the equipoise of the community; time, and infinite labor inseparable from such a mighty course of re-construction, to be confronted, directed, borne, and brought to fulfilment; in fact, the life of the city is to be revitalived, sent through new channels and the pulse and purpose of a great people re-set and re directed. And the-e immense and violent Changes will invok1 an antagonism that was not dicemable in the vortex of mutual stress and uproar of the initial attack. And in the vast readjustment, involving the far-reaching changes and adaptions of persom-H and property in terests, will come the true test of the San Franciscan character. This ordeal will bring out the biggness aad the lit tleness of it all, and from what the world has noted to date, there is much ex pected from the great state and its great metropolis, and the world is not prepared for any disappointment. city, and to attempt to earry out the abominable program. That it did not. doe not relieve it from the reproach that will attach ti it forever. In anoth er column will be found nn account of the incident, and the strictures of a sister-city in the Cioldon State, upon the man and the matter. O ' MANUMISSION FROM SUPER STITION. Not a single clergyman within our knowledge has arisen to announce that the devastation of San Francisco was a divine punishment for the "iniimity of its inhabitants." No better pioof could be given that theological superstition is dying out, and a saner and more humane eoneetion of the ordinances of the Creator i taking the placr of the primi tive idea that (Jod is a personal aveng er in this life for lapses from righteous ness. With the disappearance of super stition has come a liberation of the mlads of mankind from unreasoning terror of the elements. People now realize that the collapse of an insecurely construct ed building is not a visitation f God's wrath for somebody else's misdoing, but a direct and natural result of faulty plans and indifference to consequence. Now that the clergy have ceased to as cribe to the diety the conequenees of human greed and folly, the ground is cleared for more wholesome laws and regulations to govern construction. In competent architects and dishonest con tractors must bear the responsibil ity for the di-asters they cause when the pulpit declines to vindicate them by putting the blame on a cruel and revengeful God. The brevity of human life is illus trated by the fact that it takes about two average lifetimes to finish Paul Jones' funeral. The senate would certainly have the laugh on its constitutional lawyer if, after all, the Hepburn rate bill should be sent back to the house of represen tatives unamended. THE ASTORIA SEASON. Astoria's day is at hand. Superb weather, the mitigation of the cloud and chill of winter, the flitting first tour ists, the Sundey excursions from the metropolis, the gathering activity of the summer enterprises of all kinds, indicate the approach and fulfillment of the As toria season. Let it come. The city and her people are ready to make good in all ways, to give her best and heartiest greeting to everyone; to be receptive in all ways, and to maintain her name and fame as the cleverest, best-natured, and most reasonable watcring-plaee-popula-lation on the Pacific coast. It is up to us, and if we can't pass it to the limit of universal approbation, why don't eome to see us next year, that's all! LOS ANGELES ALONE. It remained for the beautiful city of the Angles, the semi-tropical capital of the State of California, to furnish the one, mean episode in the magnificent history of the San Francisco holocaust to date It was the first and only city fn the country to talk about shutting its gates against the fleeing and im poverished refugees " the stricken Of course, the real explanation is that earthquakes, volcanoes and sen sun spots are caused by rotary and circumdicular slipping of the thoughts of those scientific experts. at Astoria, in the State of Oregon, at the cre of business, April 8, 1900.
