THE PLAN FAILED.
The comprehensive, political plan of
the Oregon Democracy to register as
Republicans throughout the State, and
vote for the weakest nominees in the
Republican roter, has failed utterly,
and while the Democrats may lay a
bit of unction to their souls for having
inspired a clever trick, the credit is
wrecked by the di-mal lsue of its ap'
plication. And, anent this very subject,
it strikes us, that the Hon. Oswald
West, State Land Agent of Oregon, an
appointee of Governor Chamberlain (the
demi-god of the northwestern Jackson
ians), might have been more dignifiedly
employed during the conduct of the
Republican primaries in this county,
than in canvassing Clatop and Astoria
in the interest of a prominent Republi
can aspirant for a state office, an occu
pation wholly at variance with the regu
lar performance of his official duties
(and for which he draws specific compen
sation) and calculated to arouse a senti
ment involving his chief and himelf in
the justifiable supposition that there is
"a deal on," somewhere. He bad bet
ter remained at the capital in the pur
suit of his sworn duties.
A mother is justified in locking up

The tiHii and woman who try to
make their home theintot interesting
spot on earth for each other, and
'tor tiK'ir friend ami 'thoi-e who are
! near and dear to them, have but occa
sional use for the club. It is to them,
like the theatre, a pleasant place to
enter now and then but not a pot to
dwell in.
FOOD, WARMTH, SHELTER.
Something to eat, where-with-all to
be clothed, and comfortable shelter, are
the crying needs of the hour in un
happy San Francisco, and the quicker
the great volumnes of money now en
route to the desolated town can be con
verted into these essentials, the sooner
will the work of redemption and re
juvenation be begun and brought to
palpable showing. A prostrate people
can help themselves if their vital and
most poignant troubles are removed
and they are put upon their healthful
feet. There are tens of thousands of
eager and willing hands ready to take
hold of the huge task of clearing away
the wreckage and putting up the pre
liminary homes and warehouses that
are to shelter and supply them in the
immediate future, if only tbe grind of
their present deprivation is relieved;
and it i not to be doubted that the
wisdom that has met and handled the
dreadful sti-ess of the past hundred
hours, will .fail at the moment of evr-n
greater need. It is immeasureably to
the glory of the San Franciscans that
they have met the tremendous emer
gency with such fortitude and good
sense, nor is it conceivable the fine
spirit will desert them in the abund
ance of trouble yet confronting them.
AN OUTSIDE VIEW.
Anyone who studies the Oregon pa
papers right now can see the advantage
of the direct primaiy system of nomi
nating candidates for office, in the wide
and open discussions of the merits of
the various aspirants. For the first
time in the history of Oregon polities
are being done in the open. What are
known as "Gum Shoe" politics and
"stilT hunts," which are still so popular
in this Stat', don't go any more in
Oregon. If a man wants an office he
or his friends must come in the open
and say so and get after the votes.
Every man stands on his own merits
